    Diff Oil

    Gday All,

Looked in FAQ and did a search, but cant find reference to what oil is used in the D3 diffs..

I am about to service the D3 and have the engine oil sorted but am interested in what diff oil is used.

    Synthetic or Mineral ?

    Cheers Ean

It is a full synthetic (expensive) Castrol oil. SAF-XA perhaps?

    Castrol SAF-XA

Full synthetic rear axle, SAE 75W/140, API GL6. Engineered to provide protection under extreme operating temperatures, it is our prime recommendation for rear axles used in competition, severe duty and long drain applications. Suitable for both limited and non-limited slip rear axles.

    Fully Synthetic.

Locking & Non-locking Diff each use a different oil too.

    Cheers

    Here you go

Non locking differential shown; manufacturer recommends Castrol SAF-XO. If fitted with electronic locking differential use Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus, 1.6 litres.
SAF-XO is a 75W-90 GL5 full syn non-LSD diff oil, often recommended for MAN and ZF truck diffs

[edit] anyone know who actually make the D3/D4 diffs ?

    Hi Ean,
I use Royal Purple fully synthetic 75W-90 in my diffs, seems to work for me.

    Hi Ean,
Slightly off-topic, but I thought it advisable to relate a cautionary tale.

Some time ago, a forum member had his D3 serviced at the LR dealer in Darwin and they used 15W-40 oil in the engine. When challenged, they said that was what LR recommended for tropical conditions, which is absolute bull****.

If you are servicing yourself, this, naturally, is irrelevant.

    Best of Luck,
    Peter

    Thanks Peter,
I remember reading that, but in the tropics 15w-40 proberly wouldn't be so bad..

I am not using that, but would think a synthetic oil would be fine up here of that grade, or even 5w-40..

    Thanks again.

    Cheers Ean

Sorry, but I disagree for two reasons:
    1. I doubt that you could get a fully-synthetic 15W-40 oil at the right specs.
    2. The temperature seen by the oil is engine temperature, rather than ambient.

I would use the 5W-40 oil in preference.

    Thanks again.

The engines are too expensive to compromise on the oil.

    Best Wishes,
    Peter
