Performance chips> Are they worth the money???

I have a 3L, and it gives you get increase in power and fuel economy.

What I like about there product is you have a optional EGT monitor. So if you drive it super hard and the EGT's get to high, it turns the tune down automatically. The difference with Steinbaurer, is you get the power and then it backs it off. Nothings monitored so if the EGT does get high, theres nothing to cut back the power.

Basically I'm running the car over the dyno with the Steinbaurer and seeing its out put. Then, taking it off the car and putting the ChipIt with a custom tune. I will drive it for a few days before i buy the product (If its better). The guys at ChipIt have been excellent with their customer service and are willing to do this without charge so I can make a decision on the better product.

I really like the Steinbaurer module, but I am worried about the smoke when I give it some, especially on the beach as I use the right foot a lot more.

Well, I had the chipit tune to the car - well 90% done.

Basically they only had time to disable the steinbaurer and plug in the chip it module. We did about 12 runs up and down the road to test and fine tune the car.

Had the car spit the **** in the first run with 'Restricted mode' and the third run with 'Engine fault' codes. But they had the device to read the fault which told them what was to turn down the boost.

Anyway, its amazing they do everything from the laptop and that device reader, control the air, fuel, EGT's etc.

So the tune is 90% done, and now needs fine tuning over a dyno - hopefully tomorrow but maybe next week. The impression so far is WOW to say the least!. In fact its a stupid amount of difference!

So I have two tunes available, 'wild' and 'wild-er' and they can be selected by a flick of a button. 'I thought that was pretty cool'

I will let you know the results from the dyno when it happens! We will compare standard, Steinbaurer and the chipit. But I have no doubt the torque is over 750nm atleast.

PS: Forgot to mention the car has 3 EGT's sensors already... clever stuff!

Do people tend to use a module like the chipit one disucssed or do they get a reflash. I was looking at the DMS reflash or Evolve one for my D3 2.7

Yeah the consensus here is definitely that reflashing/remapping is the way to go over piggy-backing, on the proviso that have the ability to 'un-flash' and reflash when you need/want to. This depends mostly on the remap provider and partly on you having a pc and being ok plugging in to your car's ECU.

I've read on some of the chip sites that the disadvantage of remaps is that they're permanent/locked/expensive to remove via the original vendor, hence you can void your factory car warranty etc - but as far as I can tell (and Tombie will confirm) that's some serious bollocks. Perhaps in the early days (like the early D2s) before ECUs were flashable, and the chip had to be taken out and remapped, it was hard to undo.

Anyway BAS have a good reputation for providing the aforementioned good remap and the flexibility to un-map at will. He/they did a great job on my D2, there's plenty of happy D3 customers on the forum, and if I now had a D3 rather than D4 I'd be going BAS in a heartbeat. :) Bluefin seem to offer similar and have positive feedback here also.

does anyone know much about chipping a Hi-Lux 3 litre Diesel. Its the earlier 3KZTE (i think) 2003 model. The motor that was introduced in 199-200, and has about 85 kw. I've had two, the first one delivered 9-10 litres per 100 kays and the one I have now which I purchased new in 2003 uses 8 - 8.5 litres per 100. I have considered chipping it but am a little apprehensive about cracking the head or doing some sort of damage to the engine. Increased fuel economy would be welcomed with open arms, as for power more would be good but I can live with what it delivers. I quiet often tow a car float with a Land Rover on it and an increase in power may hopefully mean better fuel economy under those conditions. At present it delivers about 20 litres per 100 kays when towing.

Did those 'luxes actually have engine management systems? I'm pretty sure people I've known with those have stuck to good old mechanical upgrades - turbos, intercoolers etc. Best Hilux ever made though, I reckon - IFS was a good compromise after the live-front-axle 2.8L break-you-before-they-break series, but not gone soft like the new ones.
Of course - Land Rover proved with the D2 with ACE, that you can have good ride, handling /and/ live axles! And I used to get about 12 to 13 L/100km when towing cars on trailers behind mine.... Oh I miss my D2... :|

I had a piggy back chip on mine,don't now what type as it was company fitted and honestly I couldn't tell any difference between having it on and off.The second lux we had broke a rear diff and had a clutch fail and Tojo used the chips as an excuse not to warranty them so they were taken off. Pat

Looks like ill be Paying BAS a visit early after Easter. Taking delivery of a D3 HSE on Wednesday so the reflash is first thing on the cards. B nice to have the grunt of a 3.0 for the price of a 2.7. Had a 15 month wait to get a landrover back in my family since the nasty hail took my beloved 1992 defender.

Well I've done about 600kms with the new tune from 'ChipIt' and its brilliant compared to the plug and play boxes. I have zero lag now doesnt matter where i punch the pedal. I would seriously look at this brand as its made in Australia and it can be fully tune via the laptop. They even give you the software and USB to change the tune yourself! :angel:

In regards to fuel, I pulled 650kms off the tank and I was letting it rip like a kid on a lolly pop. Yesterday I had to refuel and decide to drive home 'Nicely'. I averaged 7.6L/km according to the computer, so it would be good to see what it does on a long run.

I haven't had a chance to go over the dyno yet due to work been flat out, but hopefully after the easter long weekend. I expect the power would be well over 750nm if not in the 800's. The best bit about this tune is the acceleration is so smooth and offroad in sand is just WOW!
