Shouldn't that be: "Ouch...you're not nice"?
Sorry I just could not resist, you left yourself wide open. :D
As they say - "Cheap shots are good shots":D.
Terry - is the D3 resurrection on track?
Not that I think that jumping up and down on the drawbar is particularly indicative of what happens with a van in tow whilst moving, but jumping up and down on the towbar of a D4 without any trailer/van attached hardly moves the suspension, let alone when there's an extra 200 or so kgs holding it down. Even my D4 without a trailer and now with D3 shocks barely moves with all my 85 kgs trying to bounce it. D4 shocks are quite stiff and the D3's are too albeit not quite so, at least when new.
Okey dokey, first post on here, so be gentle. Rather than start a new thread, I picked up this older one as I think it is relevant and maybe saves a whole bunch of repeating.
We have now whittled down our final decision on a tug to a new LC 200 GXL or Disco 4 but leaning strongly towards the LC as I can't quite get over the reliability/service/parts/resale value hump for the Disco. Van will be an "on road" van with basically no off roading. 23' 6", tare 2350, ATM 2757kg, ESC as standard, two people 3 largish dogs. Now, with the LC I am going to have to upgrade the GVM (springs, bags or similar). LC quoted pricing (without haggling it's their "special October deal") at this stage is $85,999. Current price list I have for a D4 TDV6 (base) $76,298, $92,778 (RRP).
Apart from the "ours is better - theirs is crap" I need some convincing as to why I should go the D4. The GVM upgrade is going to cost me a few $$$ I suspect as it just won't cut the mustard to carry the basic load. Then there is the WDH and....
Any constructive thoughts would be appreciated.
Only you can make that decision based on your own research. There is plenty of discussions on this topic already on here so if you use the search function it should be easy to find many threads on this information.
One parting thought, why not drive both and then decide? I have not met many who have driven a new D4 and a new Cruiser and then decided to buy the LC.
Agree with Terry - take them both for a good long test drive and then decide for yourself.
I'm one of those he has mentioned - I've driven both (in fact, I still do - we have some LC200's at work) and I bought a D4.
As for the "reliability/service/parts/resale value hump for the Disco" - I think you'll find that both of the vehicles mentioned are pretty much even on all of these points now. To be honest, I've heard more bad stories about LC200 reliability than for the D4, but that is probably weighted a bit by the fact that there are more LC200's on the road too.
I live in Kalgoorlie, and while there is no Landrover dealer local to me any more (there obviously is a fairly large Toyota dealership) - I can still get Landrover parts in about the same timeframe as friends who own Toyotas (you'd be surprised at the number of parts that Toyota dealerships have to get in "overnight" these days).
And you won't need to worry about a WDH for the D4 - in fact, Landrover recommends strongly against them. Many on here would recommend that you fit a Mitchell Bros hitch to the D4 though in place of the standard LR tow hitch. I'll leave comments on that one to those who know better than me (personally I've had no problems with the original LR hitch, but I don't do that much towing either).
It's your choice - hope you make one that you end up happy with. :D
I have a Disco 4 2.7 lt and am towing a 22ft 3.1ton. I have made a total of two trips one of 3month 6000km and this year a three month trip of 9400km up North and back to Melb. The Disco behaves absolutely fantastic I have had no problems at all (maybe I am lucky?) and my usage is on average 16.6 lt/100km(Diesel). I use a tow hitch similar to the Mitchell that I modified myself (I posted pics on this subject). I do not use WDH and have no problems.
I drive my rig via the rev counter so to speak keeping it around 2-2500revs which gives me about 85-90 km/hr. If I get to a hill climb i switch the cruise control off and drive it "manually" I might not be the fastest up hill but then ...so what.!
As far as other cars are concerned I really do not know all I can say is that I have a stock standard Disco 4 and should mention that if you really have problems with these modern cars, then you have problems. Can you imagine the local black smith in that town beyond the black stump looking under the bonnet and asking what those 4 black boxes are all about...?!
So to cut a long story short my Disco 4 serves me fine no complaints. Mind you I had a Prado prior to this but its only good for 2,5tons. otherwise it was a good car. I have a problem with a V8 Diesel but that is perhaps my personal "thing" ....Its just a lot of Cylinders a lot of litres etc..! Good luck !
