good eye! yup, that is elephant hill. such a great area. last fall was my first trip to the moab area. i hope to go back soon.
i figured that the 17" wheels wouldn't be possible on the US spec LR3, but i thought i'd check with you guys about 17" aftermarket wheels as it seems more guys in australia are experimenting with the capablities and limitations of this truck. thanks for the help!
OTT - You should have seen Elephant Hill before Canyonlands was made a National Park! The back portion, which is drilled and blasted into a cutout didn't exist. I remember we kept one vehicle parked on the top, and it winched down the other Willy's Jeep backards. That allowed the lowered vehicle to continue on. The remaining vehicle was left on top so that it could winch the one in the canyon back up. The rock face was so steep (like 50 degrees - had to rope climb up and down) that a vehicle couldn't self-winch up as the engine oil collected in the back of the engine and wouldn't lubricate the engine. I don't miss those good ole days. Still there were no human barriers. There are a few blocked off spaces that were so narrow that we had to take the mirrors off the Willy's and we could drive all the way up Salt Creek to the cliffs just before the All American Man. I seem to recall that my father and his friends even designed the road layout in Kessler Park, which was filled with grazing cattle.
BMW X5 17" rims wont fit the V8 as there's less than half an inch clearance on the TDV6 and the weights use some of that gap.

I recall that someone fitted an Italian made 17x7.5 to their 2.7 so they might be worth checking too.

Guys, mind if I try to crack an old 'Chestnut' while there is an active thread on wheels and tyres.
Got to make a decision soon, on tyres for 18" ( Green Oval ) rims. I would like to be able to fit BFG 265/65R18. These give the best sidewall height of 6.78", but increase the OD of the tyre by 39mm, which is not acceptable in QLD.
When I spoke to you, Gordon ( ggHaggis ), you tried to put my mind at ease, but can I ask if there is anyone out there with the above combination, and do you get any contact with wheel arch structure of any sort.
The Goodyear Silent Armour, 265/60R18 seems the perfect fit, with a sidewall increase, from standard, of .75", and only an OD increase of 11mm. Anybody with experience with these tyres??
Finally, a bit of interest here. I have not got my car yet, ( D4 ) two more days, but I have it's handbook. On page 221, Approved Winter tyres, I found, 255/65 R19 Goodyear Ultra Grip being allowed. This tyre has a 51mm increase in OD.
I wont know what the vehicle Tyre Placard says till I get my hands on the goods.

I think the point I was trying to make re the BFG 265/65R18 was that it will fit, not its legality. In Qld, it would not be legal (ignore the 'approved' winter tyre data - that's for European legislation).
The Goodyear Silent Armor is a good choice, as is the Cooper ATR. Both were surprisingly good at providing traction in quite difficult terrain on our recent Advanced Driving weekend. The Yoko AT/S is a little more aggressive, and so a little noisier in comparision. JessieB on here has the Silent Armors, so I'm sure he can add to this.
