Of course punitive CO2 taxation really means a focus on fuel economy. The 8 speed gearbox is used because it uses less fuel than the 6 speed.

That's partially correct. We get battered for tax in the UK with cars that have high CO2 emissions, both in terms of the yearly tax disc cost (knocking on for £500 a year now for that level of emissions and only ever going up) and also if running the vehicle as a company car, in personal taxation. Given the cost of them, plenty are run as company vehicles so anything they can do to make them more attractive to the fleet buyers is a bonus. The UK government also introduced a fee for first registration as well, based on the emissions so for the first year it now costs £1030 for the highest polluters. I know with a £40k+ car that's a drop in the ocean, but it's still an extra cost to be considered.
Do you have any specs on the fuel economy of the 8 speed to compare to the 6 speed?
I'm trying to get my father into one of these, if the 8 speed was an option, I'd take it. Got to prise him out of his tojo first.:D
They make it difficult. All the brochure downloads are "international versions" which have the 6 speed.
I found this page for the UK 8 speed RRS: Range Rover Sport SE | Land Rover UK
The extra-urban economy is the same at 8.1 l/100km.
The urban is lower for the 8 speed at 9.8 vs 11.2 l/100km.
Combined is the average of the two so 8.8 vs 9.2 l/100km overall.

Check out the terrain response dial thingy.......or lack of it.
Flappy paddles, pop up gear selector.......and no terrain response selector dial.........now that would take a bit of getting used to.
