Driving around Victoria, there signs (rather distracting ones actually) all over the place that say "Slowing down never hurt anyone".
Now there's a marketing person who doesn't understand physics.
Isn't it more about inappropriate speed?
Take away the drink/drugs/lack of ability/inappropriateness for given conditions and everything's fine. The speed may have been ok IF certain factors weren't at play. I've done some things that in other situations, weather, times if day but at 3am etc
I thought the D3/4 had 4 star safety rating. Not that that can make a huge difference, as when the VW Passat (B6) was released, it only had 4 star due to it not having a passenger seat belt reminder! Once this was introduced (6m or so later) it received a 5 star rating. Seems very solid though!!
Here in Oz the media would have highlighted the fact that a 4WD was involved and that the driver of the other car was killed, not the more pertinent fact that the other driver was the cause of the accident.

Doesn't matter what she was driving, run over is run over. Trust me I've run over 3 people in 3 different cars. They all suffered pretty similarly.
As far as I know the fifth is mainly about pedestrian safety. Probably makes the car ever so slightly less safe by making it softer for pedestrians. That said, the difference in damage is astounding. I mean the Discovery 3 is 80% heavier (1.7 vs 2.5 T) and the passenger compartment was gone.
I suspect that the Discovery's passenger cell is somewhat stronger than the audi's. My reasoning is that the forces acting on the two were identical and for the same amount of time (Newton 3).
Heavier vehicles tend to be stronger in order to support their own weight. This extra strength is what accounts for the difference in damage between the two cars (specifically the passenger cell). The total mass and speed of the cars accounts for the magnitude of the damage caused (total).
Wonder how a Discovery 1 would have fared (I drive one).
Glad that the family is alive. I wish the other driver had crashed into an inanimate object instead.
Okay, thought about it a bit more. So a heavier car, generally being of sturdier construction, deforms less. A direct result of the larger mass is that given the same force (of impact in this case) the heavier car will undergo less acceleration (de-acceleration in this case). Thus, even though the lighter car may survive intact (see smart car crash tests) the car will, due to having less mass, undergo far larger acceleration which will kill the occupants.
Thus, heavy car that is sturdily built is the car of preference if accident safety is a concern.
