So the plastic housing is quite hard and wont damage too easily ?
Is the filter usually not so tight a fit ?
I have been told to fit the new filter on the engine first ? Is this the case ?

You just need to be gentle and not force anything.
The filter goes in first - there is a little but that sticks out with a small O ring on it and it needs to go into a small hole on the drivers side - you need to climb right up on top of the engine to see it.
You put the filter in that with the protrusion in the hole and then you screw the outer casing on. Put some oil on the large outer o ring as it makes it a little easier to screw in - to not overtighen.
I dunno why they did not design the engine to take a standard oil filter canister.
