I have had the "unsightly" screw on ones for about 5 years. Work perfectly, and swap them to trailers as necessary. Batteries last atleast 12 months. Have been hammered offroad and still no issues.
They are small and have no effect to tyre balance.
Brother as used the internal valve, and has swapped to the wind on units from TPMS....due to failure.

Since the internal devices require that tyre is removed. I would expect the balance would also need checking.
The screw on devices would appear to be a simple solution. I was concerned that they would get stolen.
You are correct Fred that the tyre has to be removed to fit the sensors..I have sensatyre fitted to both mine.
The tyres will thus be balanced after fitting
The cost of the unit is about the same as a new tyre..Just save one tyre from blowing and it will have paid for itself.
The display sits anywhere you want ..as long as it will reach a 12v socket
I don't think anyone would bother stealing them. They do have a lock nut, but after 5 years, no one has had a go at mine....lock nut would be a pain with all the airing down that I do.Quote:

Are the internal devices prone to damage when a tyre deflates? If so, does this mean a warning may not be transmitted?

You would have noticed the drop in pressure via the display b4 any damage occurred (hopefully)
Replacement sensors are not that expensive and just need to be programmed into the display.

Would love to have the factory system in my 2011 HSE, (talks about it in the handbook at least), however suspect the rigmoral of getting up and running would be prohibative on a number of fronts?
After due consideration I have bought and fitted the TPMS Australia system. 9 sensors and the base unit came to $670. The sensors are only 8grams and are totally sealed. Eventually the batteries will go flat and the sensors will need to be replaced. Replacements are sold at 20% off the $55 for the first purchase.
I am happy with the system. The receiver is small and sits in the little shelf above the upper glove box in my D4. It was straight forward to configure 6 tyres for the car and three for the trailer. I have specified different pressures front, rear and trailer. The trailer sensor signals are readily detected and I did not need to buy the trailer relay/signal booster which saves and extra $135. It is easy to adjust the receiver to stop monitoring the trailer when it is not connected.
Little counter weights are supplied to restore the wheel balance, but fitting these is optional and I have not felt the need to do it yet. I have fitted the anti-theft locks while I drive in the city, but they are easily taken off with the supplied tool. I intend to remove the locks when I'm on trips to make airing up and down easier.
Bought mine from Opposite Lock and the price is the same as listed online at TPMS Australia.
I've had the TireDog kit fitted to my Discovery WOLF rims for about a month now. They screw onto the valve and have the lock ring for added piece of mind.
I've been fording with them, sand driving, rock crawling etc and am very happy with them.
Since I started this thread with a view to fitting them to my RRS I'll go for an internal rim mounted brand called 'Orange'...they are getting very good reviews.
