I haven't had one, but in the Nissan they advised that the exhaust should be modified and a temp gauge installed to monitor. As soon as chip manufacturers say that, I believe the exhaust gases are running too hot, and thus potentially past LR/nissan/anyone specs.

(eg Steinbauer doesn't suggest an exhaust temp as they "don't try to get so much power and torque out of it that it is needed")

You can't afford the exhaust after the Steinbauer.....you need two Steinbauer's for the D4!
I had a Steinbauer in my previous car. It did not increase rail pressure. Brother in law is a diesel fuel injection specialist at a well known fuel injection place in Perth.....they love chips that increase rail pressure....it's great business for them in repairs. That's what worries me. Steinbauer apparently does not do this, but it does increase the length of the fuel spray. More fuel more power more heat...exhaust is a good way to help reduce the heat.

I would not get an add on chip type but a remap on the D4. Early 2.7 ones worked with superchips bluefin but later ones appear to have issues. (check with bluefin) 3.0 L requires a bench map.

I almost bought a chip for the Nissan, which certainly could've done with more power, but everyway I looked at it, I reckon it puts too much strain on the engine or the exhaust or makes the engine bay hotter, and becomes risk of other parts failing. Couldn't do it.....

There must be room in engines to put out more power and torque. Manufactures often use the same motor for the next model and end up with more power and torque. They not only do this by the computer software but also change and strengthen some internals.....something an add on chip or remap will ever be able to do.
Chips and remaps have their place...but it has to stress the engine, so minimum you would need to do is improve exhaust has flow and install egt gauge.
