I have a set of performance rv-5 on my D4 and after having just returned back from the cape I haven't had a single problem with them. Although looking back performance steered me away from the bb6 to these when I was buying them.....

The reality is the D3 is 90% road car that the BOSS drives daily, so a good set of A/T will suffice, and comparing $$$ there is not that great a price difference to warrent buying rims and tyre's.
But in a couple of years when I am thinking of doing the Canning again, then 17's may be a more realistic option

I just got another puncture in my back left OEM Wrangler (6 holes in 6 months - all onroad) this week so it is time to get a change of tyres. Going GG ATs in the standard 18" rims and later Maxxis Bighorns on my 17" BMW rims (would prefer BFG MT KM2s but they are a bit expensive).
However everyone I have spoken too have said the MTs on the 17" are actually OK as an everyday tyre so considering whether to save money and just put the 17" muddies on.
I could put the 18" on the camper.

Whilst many people are happy to live with MT's as a daily tyre, be aware that:
* Wet road performance is reduced.
* Fuel consumption at highway speeds is worse.
* Noise is increased, although not uncomfortable until the tyres start scalloping.
* The shoulders will wear rapidly, reducing their performance in mud.
* MT's tend to be more difficult to balance (although never had problems with the Bighorns).
They look good though

Gordon
I agree, that seems to be the general view and I also thought that but people I have spoken to who have them (Bighorns) on D3s have found most of the above not to be the case - certainly noise of the KM2s on my 101 is non existant but a RRS and 101 are worlds apart.
As I can get GG ATs (not AT2s) for $270 I have decided to go dual wheels - they will go on the 18s for everyday use and occasional light offroad and beach work and I will get Bighorns on the 17s for extended offroad use.

And you will also be giving the jack a good workout.
I still recon you can't do better than a set of LT's in A/T or M/T on 17's
That way the spare will still fit where it belongs, speedo, gearing, etc is still correct, and you will have a tough tyre.
Oh,and the jack & winch won't be needed
Just my 2 cents worth........
