So how reliable are these things... Really?

I've heard some stories stating the RRS/D3/D4 are quite reliable and have seen many clock up a lot of KM, especially from the 08 model year. I've also heard stories that they're not that reliable. Coming from a 2000 Audi S4 with 250K on it, which are slammed for reliability and yet mine has been quite good, I'm not one to sway easily at these reports, hence why I thought I'd give the RRS TDV6 a shot. However I've only had my RRS for 6000km and I'm wondering if the trans is on its way out. Having had the Audi I kind of jump on every little noise out of the ordinary and fix it ASAP.

So what are all of your opinions, those who have owned these cars for a while? Are there a set of 'common issues' that you replace with updated parts and then you're good to go??

I'm keeping a bit aside for repairs at this point, just in case.

I have a 12 D4 and since March done 36,000KM and have not had one problem apart from a intermittent white-out on the entertainment screen, and I have been over some very rough road.
You have not said how many KM you have on your RRS but the consensus on this forum is that the auto fluid should be changed, with the filter etc at about 80,000KM as I certainly will be doing.
I also like to get an oil and filter change every 12,000KM instead of 24,000km for peace of mind.
To say I am over the moon with the car as a whole is an understatement.
    cheers, Graeme

165,000km. Generally I'll cover about 40-50K km per year. I don't have any records to the effect that the oil and filter for the trans had been done and unfortunately this was something I only stumbled upon after buying the car and looking into the maintenance of them. Car has the slight shudder under some load conditions that seems to be characteristic of a worn torque converter. Apart from that it has been great and is obviously a very well looked after vehicle. Suspension pump is quiet and engine is smooth. Fuel consumption is about 10-11 since I live in a fairly hilly/windy area. Obviously a lot less on the highway.

    Hi Rich,
I've had three D3's and now I'm on my first TDV6 RRS, 2007, 116 klms on the clock, agent serviced up until the last two prior to me buying the vehicle, they were done by Auto Masters, I suspect that the cost of servicing at the agent and other costs "encouraged" the sale. I've had a couple of issues, sort of easily fixed, I've done the metal pan conversion on the tranny, no real issues here.
These vehicles are so technically advanced there are bound to be a few hiccups along the way. I think my vehicle personally is fantastic. Economical, a bit sporty, tows the camper trailer a treat, comfortable, reliable and looks the part.
These forums usually have a lot of people with issues looking for answers, and usually get the answers they want or advice they need. One of the reasons I like the Land Rover Marque is the comaradarie of the owners. I have never had the relationship with an off the street Nissan Patrol owner that I have had with an off the street Land Rover owner, never.
I prefer to be in the leading group and not one of the followers, being a follower does have advantages, but so does being a leader.

If the gearbox sump is plastic then there's a good chance (but not conclusive) that the oil hasn't been changed.

The timing and high preasure fuel pump belts need changing at 165k or seven years , not cheap but esentual it is done . Would definatly change the trans fluid at least .
They are no more of a problem than any other modern 4x4 but they drive heaps better .

My LR3 TDV6 bought new in 2006 and traded in in 2011 had no other issues than a windscreen washer bottle replaced under warranty and the brake booster recall. It had done 50,000 trouble free K's.

Seeing the vehicle has 165K Km's, the FIRST thing would be to do the Auto service replacement pan kit-just do it, these things love fresh fluid & if it doesn't then can cause grief.
168K service (12K or 6 Month servicing) is cam belts, again peace of mind as per service schedule.
The rest is just routine maintenance.
    Cheers

Im on my 3rd RRS in as many years . I always manage to drive away from the dealership before the problems start...lol. But then i have had Toyotas, Mitsubishi's and all other makes and I now believe all modern vehicles are so technicially advanced, there is always going too be a few problems that the technicians struggle with.... just buy one and get to know a good dealer service department.
