Adaptive Cruise Control for D4?

Thanks for your info on the HS CAN BUS Graeme, I now at least am confident enough to tackle that part of things.

@ Sean, funny that the research you have done shows the ACC ECU behind the battery, I was hunting around in there today and saw a a pair of HS CAN BUS wires right there behind the battery, there also is a heap of room there so just need to fabricate a light bracket.

Fuse 7 in the battery box, which is un-used, has the ACC symbol on it so with the addition of a female spade and a fuse it could be the ideal place to get the power for pin 13 on the ECU and 1 on the radar.( I haven't tested it yet though)

I have also found a bracket for sale on ebay (I'm having trouble posting the link, but search for Rover ACC) for the radar unit, I wouldn't buy it myself, but it gives some good info as to placement of the radar.

As to this ruddy Forward alert switch :confused::confused:, I have been thinking it was a sensor / switch of sorts but now I'm thinking it's a on off type of switch :confused::confused:. So the turning it on and off being available in the setup menu is...................... I guess done through the CAN BUS??????????????? and the pins 5, 20, & 12 on the ecu are not wired to anything??????????? Although I would imagine that there is no harm in grounding pin 12 regardless. Could someone with access to topix see if there is a jumper in there instead on post 2010 vehicles? PLEASE...

The post 2010 seems to be an issue, especially as Colin from BBS is working on a D3 and Sean and I are working on D4s

There is a bracket for the ACC ECU that facilitates mounting:

I think this will fit in the D4 as I am pretty sure the mounting points are there. I am thinking of getting these rather than trying to cobble something together. As you say though, looking it does give a good idea of where to locate the radar unit - dead centre behind the grill.

Both of these brackets are available from a few different places and not too pricey.

Did you get your steering wheel switch? I've tried to order it from Rimmers too but they tell me that LR want a full chassis number and photo's of existing switch.

Could it be that they are trying to stop people doing this mod?

G'day Ken, I haven't had any issue at all thus far. It is still on back order with LR and they are expecting it to be delivered to them 28th Jan. They gave me this info after I enquired via email on Monday as to expected delivery date.

On placement of the radar unit, the photos on the powerfuluk.co.uk site show exactly where the radar sits on RRS 2010 models on. It is actually placed behind the bumper and not in the position BBSSPY had it when testing his set up. There is no room to put there on the D4 anyway due to the additional radiator cores. I'll be interested to see if the D4 has the mounting points for the bracket.

Also, I mentioned earlier that the ECU may go behind the battery. From further reading it seems more likely, and logical, that it is fitted in the cabin on the passenger side some where - the images on the catalogue are a little misleading.:D Is that where you were looking for a place to install it?

I have also been trying to identify the plugs used in the radar and ECU as I am not too keen on soldering wires directly on to the pins. The maker of the socket on the ECU is Tyco. I am trying to see if I can find anything to match. What are you planning to do for this?

Sean, I just got an email today saying the part number has changed and they need to replace the switches in pairs, and to do so they will need The VIN and photo's of existing.

I'm not sure where to place the ecu yet, I think the HS CAN bus also goes to the Transfer case ECU in second battery box, I've still got a sliver of room in there, and it's easier than working upside down behind the dash. Other than that maybe behind the center part of the dash where the Hids4u gif interface device fits?

As for the connectors to the Radar, I've not received mine yet, but I'm hoping it's the same size pins as the ECU? In which case a old PC will have ample connectors floating about in it that you use.

Hmmm, I just just checked my email again and have not received any message to that effect. You may need to look else where - there are many places that list the part. Famous Four have it listed for a few pounds less than Rimmer. If desperate and as a last resort, I am sure the Russians would sell you one - just make sure you use paypal! ;) (or maybe Pete (sneigy) could help?)

I don't think I would be placing the ECU outside of the cabin. Looking at it, it does not seem to be water tight with slits in the casing near the connector. :no2:

The pins in the radars connector are larger than the ECU. Also, the ECU connector is keyed so not sure about the PC cables doing the job.

Looks like Colin has been doing a little bit of work on this over on Disco3.co.uk - he has updated some info regarding the pin outs on the ECU. Seems to match up with the Schematic Graeme supplied.

Hey Sean, I've managed to order one, but it wasn't easy, I ended up sourcing one from Wiggs on the disco3 site. Everywhere else insisted on selling a pair of switches and needed VIN# to confirm which pair you would need, Obviously that's not gonna work on a car that doesn't have ACC as an option to start with.

Wiggs reckons it is to do with the trim on the buttons and surround, chrome bits, shiny black, flat black etc. so they now want to sell pairs to avoid mismatched switched... Makes sense I guess;)

I've been getting more info on the Disco3 site as Colin (the Guru) from BBS frequents that more than here. So I will post my progress there for all that are interested.

I'm up to having the Ecu fitted and the radar fitted, i've tried to enable via the MSV2 in the CCF but no joy yet............................. I'm hoping it is because the steering wheel switch is not yet fitted.

ON the bright side, the ACC ECU is being recognized by the car.

I am happy to chip in on this here as long as no one mentions CC for V8 Disco 2's on the Nanocom ;)

There have been a few year based changes to the Foundry Trim (the grey / silver metallic specked bit) and finish on the Horn buttons of the steering wheel switches. the latter is possible to be swapped out with the old ones.

Ideally you need pictures and VIN's for Supercharged Range Rover Sport of equal year to get the applicable bits, but it ain't that expensive to buy a matching pair and no matter their trim you wont notice it being different on the steering wheel as opposed to the rest of the vehicles foundry finish trim.

I note that there is a lot of mention of the radar sensor mounting.
My concern is that on pre 2010 Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports that were equipped with the ACC, (Standard on the supercharged versions) the sensor was mounted offset to one side of the vehicle, and in 2010 on, was then mounted centrally. Until we have this working and are able to then swap out the sensors between pre and post 2010 versions, i do not know if this is a significant element or not.

I suspect not, as the system must be able to detect vehicles ahead even if there the road is bending and i also cannot imagine height is so important as the system must detect vehicles in front of it on inclines and declines etc.
