D1 was 300Tdi and rear locker.
D4 did it have an eDiff?
Both had 2" lift ;)
Both had muddies.
results:
Mud - D1 wins over D4
Steep Terrain - D4
Water Crossing - D1
Rocky Terrain - D1
Corrugations - D4 (No contest really)
Sand - D4
Fuel Economy? D1 used 13.5l/100, D4 20l/100 why?
Sounds like a typical dodgy 4WD Action test to me... ;)

Rocky terrain maybe o the D1 as he had a higher lift, slinky suspension and a shorter wheelbase.
Water crossings as well I would have to give to the D1 as my Cape trip was cut short last year (after reaching the tip) after taking a heap of water and mud into the starter motor.
As far as fuel economy went, I just got back from a week away through Dorrigo to Coffs towing a two tonne camp trailer with a full day off road at Coffs and used around 15l/100km, so I think they made a mistake there.
But having said that I had a ball, and as a result of that trip Overlander picked the car up and will be featured next month, including being on the front cover. The month after that will also feature my truck in a D4 vs D3 comparo, so it will be interesting to see how that reads!:D

1. A standard D1 with standard tyres has 206mm clearance. The one featured had bigger tyres so must have had more clearance under the axles.
2. Didn't they understand that the D4 offers 240mm in offroad mode and even more if you use your Llams?

As I am always a bit behind the times I only just got and read this mag - nice D4 ! As has been pointed out some of their facts seem a little dodgy.
What's with the use of the Richter scale to measure vibration !?! No jeep I've ever been in rates less than a 9.9 hahaha
Also nice article later in the mag on the diesel RRC.
It will be good to see Clancy in the mag mate!! I still use a picture as my desktop on my iPad! Still can't wait for my trip this year up the cape! I hope it comes back all right from hitting he large roo last month!

Yeah, 20L/100 is a bit steep. Maybe you need to get a more fuel efficient vehicle like a Defender:p

Billy, your D4 will have to be back to 100% before your big trip as those Cruisers are going to need a quality truck to help them through the Cape;)
Nope only a 40mm lift and 33in tyres, but i do feel like asking them if they were on the same weekend we were. Don't know where they got the db and vibration readings from, maybe the same place they got the ride heights from. I also don't know where they got your 20lph from nor my 13.5, i worked mine out to be 10.5lph (gauge had just moved of full at the end of the weekend).Quote:

A little further on in the mag on the "best diesel engines" they say that Mitusbishi pioneered direct injection diesels in 1999 with the DiD then the very next engine is the 300Tdi which kind kind of beat the DiD by just a smudge.
Minibloodhound, how did the D4 get water into the starter motor? Mine also failed one week after returning from the Cape last year but they showed it to me after the repairs and it had no water or mud in it and they told me it was sealed. Is there a breather or something that let water into yours or are they not sealed as the dealer told me?Quote:
