Having had the mirror glass from each side by side, there didn't seem to be much difference at all in the size of the reflective surface itself. I'll post a picture tomorrow of them next to each other, so you can judge.
Having used both D3 & new D4 mirrors now, I don't see any real difference either:D
Really happy with my mirrors (MY16) even after the D2. Blind spot monitoring works really well with the big mirrors as added backup!!
Here we go. MY15 D4 mirror on the left, D3 on the right.

Quite different in shape, but overall the D4 is marginally bigger I reckon.
And in terms of installation, it was not exactly plug and play, but pretty straight forward.
The connector is a different shape compared to the D3 version. But the wires are the same colours and in the same order as the D3 connector, with the exception of the extra indicator wire. So I swapped the connector block over from the D3 mirror to the D4 mirror.
For the indicator wires, I just pulled the cabling for the door indicator back through the grommet, and connected it into a spare position in the female (door loom) connector.
Took less than an hour per side, including removing the door panel.
And is the mounting to the vehicle the same?
Scott
Yes, the mounting is identical Scott.
Just one observation, the plastic plate where the mirror meets the door is quite a glossy black on the D4 mirror, compared to the matte finish on the D3. Looks a bit of a mismatch, but overall the look is better
