It's a terrible conundrum for you. Allow me to unburden you of the problem.

Send me the money - I'll buy one - and take it on a long term test drive for you and report back whether I made the right decision.

I anticipate the test drive will take approximately 15 years.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

D4 V8 is apparently slightly better than mine (direct injection in 5.0). My realistic range is no less than 450 per tank - best would be a little under 700km. Worst conditions for fuel use is on short stop start trips. Offroad is generally not bad as it is rarely working hard at all (instant torque in low range = surprising economy).

I recently did a 350km trip of mixed high speed (110+), twisty country roads (having a fun/fast time) and about 75km of dirt/tracks (incl about an hour of low range slog) and got a calculated (not indicated) economy of 13.5l/100km. I was pretty impressed with that.

I can easily do a day trip from Wollongong to Canberra return (incl commuting in ACT) on one tank (a bit over 500km).

What an intriguing idea. Which one would you take first for that long term test of yours?

What is your basis for stating that these boxes are slow off the mark? Have you driven one of these and found it slow off the mark? If so, does it happen with all these boxes and therefore is LR doing anything to overcome the slowness?

I tried one 3 weeks ago for about an hour. It's good once it's underway, but that particular vehicle needed something like a second between throttle input and movement. Enough to be annoying.

Owners on sites like disco3.co.uk have had robust debates on that topic. Some say their car doesn't do it or that it's no biggie, others that it is driving them mad.

Again, my experience was with one car only, but that and the stories on other forums is enough to make me wonder

That sounds like the software needs tweaking, which LR did for the 3.0 and the 6-speed for quite a while so I would expect the situation will be improved in due course.

Supercharged. Great engine, but I couldn't cope with the harsh ride.

It probably had 20"+ rims too which would not help ride comfort? AFAIK they do have a sportier suspension configuration too and probably weigh a fair bit less? All that would make the tide harsher...

My 8 speed has a bit of lag but not like a whole second... Apparently this box goes into neutral when sitting still (even when in D etc) so it might just be engaging again too?

Very different in suspensions settings. The sport can handle corners much faster than a D4 and its much more flat. Was in a mates recently and he threw it into a corner, and I thought it would roll....not so, it just hung on and so flat.

    Big differences.
