It's all about broadening your resale options, and optioning 7 seats is hardly a compromise. They sit flush in the back, so all your loosing is a storage space that you probably wouldn't use if you had the rubber cargo mat.
100 people are looking for a used Disco 4. Even if 70 only want/need 5 seats, a car with 7 seats still appeals to them so you still have 100 potential buyers. If you only have 5 seats, you only have 70 potential buyers.
Go and ask BMW how many potential sales they lose on a used X5 without nav. I can tell you it is a lot, because for some reason people expect an X5 to come with nav.
