D4 vs L200 in a drag...

Not a 200 series but a LC anyway.

I was exiting a National park with a caravan (3500kg) in tow when I saw a Toyota LC behind me. There was an uphill climb after the turn off so I stopped and let the guy past. He took off up hill and I launched to get some speed up.... I had to back off to stop from running into the back of him. For the next 20k I was stuck behind this barge that couldn't get itself up a hill. On the down hills and straights he would bolt only to have me catch him at every hill....

I think some of you people are suffering from wishful thinking.

While the Toyo weighs 200kg more than a base D4 is is about the same weight as a D4 Se/HSE. It has 15kw more power and 51 more NMs. So just looking at those figures the LC200 should be quicker 0-100kph.

0-100kph for the LC200 is 8.2s (TOYOTA Land Cruiser 200 / V8 4.5 V8 D-4D (286 HP) (2007 - Present) Technical Specifications & Features)

0-100kph for the 180kw 3.0 D4 is 10.7s (Discovery 4 TDV6 4x4 Turbo Diesel Efficiency | Land Rover Australia)

So the LC200 is over 2.5s faster 0-100kph. Not even the 200kg lighter Range Rover Sport can match the LC200 with a 0-100 time of 9.3s.

Looking at the specs, the LC200 is 200kg heavier than the HSE (both from manufacturer's site comparing the Sahara to the HSE), but has 12kW more power, and 50Nm more torque. I suspect power to weight, the D4 wins, and it also has a flatter torque curve, and less inertia to overcome.

Garry, you are comparing the bottom spec D4. lets compare V8 with V8:

155Kw D4 is 10.7s 0.100kpk
180Kw D4 is 9.3s 0-100kph
276Kw D4 is 7.9s 0-100kph

Yes - my bad but the 180kw D4 is still slower than the LC200 diesel. The original post related to the diesel not the petrol - I agree if you talk petrols then things will most likely be different but petrols are not the subject of the thread.

fair enough. Although, comparing the spec sheet for the LC in your link and the one on on Toyotas local site, there seems to be an increase of 15Kw over the local variant - 210 vs 195. Perhaps the 8.2s does not hold true here?

I have driven both 3.0 D4's and diesel V8 200 series. I wouldn't get to cocky about how fast a D4 is in comparison. The Toyota is not slow by any stretch of the imagination. If you guys are beating up on 200 series I'd guess that would come down to how hard the 200 series owner wants to push it.

Also if you think a D4 is quick and can easily blow away all other 4x4's at the lights just don't get to close to a new diesel Grand Cherokee owner who wnts to prove a point or you might get a bit of a shock.

This article LUXURY FAMILY WHEELS: Large/Offroad SUVs - motoring.com.au shows the 0 - 100 Kph time for the LC 200 @ 10.5 seconds which is more realistic.
The power to weight thing is a bit deceiving some times. Keep in mind the power & torque figures are at the flywheel and not what is being delivered to the wheels.
I read an interesting article a while ago in Overlander magazine, where they did a comparison of flywheel power figures compared to 'at the wheel' figures. The Discovery had the best ratio out of the four vehicles tested.

The D4 actually has more power and torque at the wheels. Toyota quote flywheel figures (engine) whereas LR quote straight power and torque.
LC200 is not slow but given it's 4.5L capacity it should be more powerful (and not blow up and not chew oil ;))
Grand cherokee is lighter as is the Toerag so they should go better.
Suprchip will boost D4 3.0L to 271 bhp and 667nm
