    D3 V6 vs V8 vs TDV6

I'm looking at buying a Disco 3 for the wide. It would need to be able to do some offroading seeing as we like touring i.e. Fraser island, probably head North etc but for the real tough 4x4 tracks I'll use my Defender.

I have now found 2 disco's which look exactly the same inside and out but teeh one has a 2.7 TDV6 (2008 with 105,000km) and the other the 4L V6 (2006 with 88,000 km).

Which one shoud I take? I've heard the fuel economy on the TDV6 is better (although haven't spoken to someone who owns one so don't know if figures are accurate) but some say the Diesel is very slow and underpowered for the big body.

How is the torque of the V6 petrol from a 4x4 perspective?

Then off course there is the V8 but that seems to be very heavy on fuel.

Please help, I need to make a decision today!

We have the diesel, wife averages 9.5 to 10 litres per 100 kmh. Uses to tow 21/2 tonne of horse and float (doesn't get as good economy towing of course) and is very happy.

Power is not an issue, keeps up with traffic, tows well, and cruises comfortably at the speed limit with enough left to overtake.

She claims its the best car she's driven, very quiet and relaxing.

There's been a few threads on here recently in a similar vein. Have a quick search and you will find them, as there was one only a few weeks ago.

The gist of them though, is that the TDV6 is best from a economy point of view, though servicing cost is slightly higher, but the V8 in real world driving was more economical in some circumstances than the V6.

The petrol V6 is the one with no real reason to exist. It's fuel consumption rivals the V8, but it's power and torque don't.

    I haven't driven a TDV6 D3, but I have driven the TDV6 Territory (same 2.7L engine) and the 3.0 TDV6 Rangie sport.
None of them could be described as slow or underpowered. The 2.7 V6 has more go than any of the older v8's.

I have a 2008 RRS TDV6. It isn't underpowered - it's a very torquey engine. If you're thinking it's going to be like a Toyota D4D or Mitsu's 3.2 forget it, it's miles ahead. Smoother, quieter, more powerful and more economical. Overtaking performance is acceptable. It's only slow if you compared it to say a performance car. Most people are surprised that I had a stage 3 Audi S4 twin turbo before this and yes it's slow compared to that. But nothing could beat that in a straight line anyway!

Fuel economy on the highway will get into the 8's. Personally I live in the Adelaide Hills and commute 90km per day down to the city and back. 50km of this is open road (30km being freeway) and 40k is Adelaide traffic. Not as bad as most of the other capitals, but still slow going. For this I would normally achieve 10-10.5L/100km. Generally I drive with a relatively heavy right foot and my car is wearing 20's, so I'd expect the figure to drop by about 1L/100km if I tried hard enough and put 18's on (as they're lighter).

have had a D3 with a TDV6 since Aug of 2007 and love it, fuel economy is very good. Around town mid 10s, highway cycle it gets down to mid 7s.

Last tankful was up the range to Toowoomba, down through Lockyer Valley with lots of hills down through Beaudesert then city/highway mix.

I got 850km with about 1/8th of a tank of fuel left.

It is not a bank donk powerwise for the capacity, rivals a small V8 and have blown a few V6 Comodore drivers away more then once.

If you can afford the addtional price then a low Km D4 with the 3.0 TDV6 might be the way to go.

Would love to trade my D3 in on a new D4 but my CFO waggles her manicured finger and goes uu ohhhh LOL

I would go with the TDV6 diesel if it was my decision to make. Oh and they are VERY smooth, you won't realise it is a diesel.

    Best of luck.
    cheers
    Peter

Now I'm only going off what I've read on this website, but the v8 actually gets better economy then the petrol v6, not to mention a bucket load more power, but personally I would be looking at the tdv6 and getting it flash tuned and the make over 500nm and give it a big kick in the back side

"Some" don't know what they're talking about!

    Thumbs up

    GyroLandy,
In October last year I traded my D2 for a 2009 D3 TDV6 SE with low klm's. I still have permagrin, the 2.7 has plenty of power, rides and handles well, is so quiet you forget it's a diesel. I can't praise these cars enough. Hope my biased opinion helps.

We test drove all 3 engines. My wife commented that the diesel engine was the best and the "fastest". This is because the way she drives (half throttle at most, not holding onto the revs too long) the better torque of the diesel makes it feel stronger.

We ended up going with the V8 (approx $14k cheaper for same k's second hand) but you really need to get under it and stay uinder it for it to really go (sounds awesome doing it though.)

Bottom line, in daily traffic and overtaking on the highway, no way could the TDV6 be considered slow.
