I made the tool out of a long piece of flat 5mm aluminium I had, it already had a cutout which fitted around the 36mm fan nut, so all I did was drill two holes to bolt it on to the hub.

Is the B+ terminal accessible with the fan and belt removed but without having to unbolt the alternator? I intend replacing the B+ cable from the starter motor with one direct to the battery and fitted with an inline megafuse. Looking from below, the B+ terminal is not really accessible but I'd happily remove the fan and belt and the alternator too if needed.
On my D3 it would be accessible if you were determined enough, I think that after removing everything else it isn't much extra effort to remove the alternator to access it.
I had the same thoughts as you about the fuse and a second cable. Initially I disconnected the starter motor to eliminate it as the short and that wasn't much fun either
After looking at the cable some time ago I thought I'd just cut the cable and insert the fuse as both ends seemed too difficult to remove. However moisture would do its normal trick and play havoc in time so a replacement lead is needed so that the fuse can be mounted up high.
Well I had the battery replaced on Friday under warranty! There was a load on the system of .4a I did measure a similar voltage as well but wasn't sure from where??? Anyways the tech said there was a bulletin out in regards to drain on the batteries and something to due with the lighting system! Great service once again from Townsville LR. I'm not sure why one of these batteries are worth but I'd think not cheap!
