Thread: 6 speed auto v 8 speed auto

Having worked for an auto trans manufacturer and gone through the transition from 4S to 6S, I'd have to say an 8S would, or should be brilliant. Fuel savings and smoothness should be getting better all the time.
So like you, I'll be interested to see what the "real world" comparison is like.

I can remember as a young lad, we used to say things like "feel it snap into second " etc etc etc,, wow, just all so wrong , which I didn't discover until I started working warranty units, then test driving them.

I prefer the 8spd, especially on the hwy but I find the rotary selector to be pants... I prefer the stick you had with the 6spd!

IMHO - 8spd, stick & paddles would the be best combo.

I agree with the above, the two 8 speeds I drove were wonderfully smooth, the dial sucks big time.
My other concern is whether the sump is still the plastic version and whether it can be replaced by a steel version easily.

Having had a 6 speed on extended test drive, and now owning the 8 speed, although the 6 was smooth enough, the 8 is noticeably better.

Personally I actually like the rotary dial, and the fact that it returns to P by itself when you switch the engine off.

I hope it doesn't do that if the vehicle is still moving, as I've found it less inconvenient to stop and restart the engine on the move to overcome restricted performance.

Have a look on DISCO3.CO.UK,there are heaps of threads about it.Almost all favour the 8speed.
Fuel efficiency is improved,which is one of the main benefits of the 8speed.

Graeme, I can't think of any circumstance where you would switch the engine off while the vehicle is still moving?
