    Buying a Second Hand D4

I'm looking at a second hand D4 (2011 TDV6) - and it looks like I'm going to have to go on my own to inspect the car.

While I'm not great with mechanicals, I can find my way round a 4WD (hubby has a Defender) and wondered if there was anything in particular I should look out for.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer.

    Thanks.

Wear items are shocks and front suspension bushes depending on kms and usage and gearbox oil change around 80K-100K usually having a steel pan fitted at the same time, although my MY10 's getting close to 110K and I haven't changed the g/box oil yet but the g/box normally gets very light treatment. Look at tyre wear all round as the alignment might need adjusting.

I have had mine since March 2010 and haven't had any problems, but from hanging around this forum, perhaps check the following:

    1) Has it been jacked up on the air compressor (instead of at the proper point on the frame)? So check under the passenger rear door, and you should see a point in the frame where the jack is used. Some people have jacked up closer to the side of the car where there is a big black cover for the air-compressor.

    2) Check that the spare tyre lowers and raises up correctly on its winch - there are several posts of how some people have lowered the winch too far and the cable has not wound back properly and it is a pain to re-wind the cable. Some others might be able to advise whether it is even possible to re-wind the spare tyre up properly if this has been a problem, so perhaps if the wheel is in the correct position then there are no worries anyway.

    3) Has the factory update been done yet for the oil scavenge? This was released this year and they replaced a part.

Finally, I would get a quote from someone on how much an Allianz Extended Warranty is these days (do a search on the thread and you will get some names coming up to ask). It may give you some more peace of mind and/or resale value.

    2011 TDV6 is a 2.7 IIRC and not a recall anyway AFAIK.

Thanks for your replies, they were very helpful.

I just got back from a 4 hour drive back to Melbourne from Warrnambool with my new D4 and I love it.

The guys at the dealership were very helpful, even put the car up on the hoist for me to look underneath.

Wow! Isn't it a fantastic car to drive?

And this one already has alot of the mods that we would have done anyway (barwork, snorkel, winch, lights, LR tank etc etc etc). Now just to work out what all the buttons and dials do.

    Thanks again.
