    Restricted performance alarm

    Hi All,

During the course of our 11,000km round trip, Melb to the tip, the new D4 fully kitted out towing the TVAN worked a treat.

However, while heading back south, just heading out or in of Newcastle, you hit these long hills! at 110km/hr, in 6th gear from 8, the vehicle flagged an alarm "restricted Performance".

Although this alarm appeared, there was no loss of power and no increase in fuel consumption or smoke bellowing. I pulled over safety to investigate while the vehicle was still running. No knock or any anomaly was obvious and the 3.0TDV6 sounded as normal.

Switched the vehicle off for 30 seconds, the alarm appeared again. Decided to drive on, found a more suitable location to stop and look closer, still nothing out of the unusual. This time switched the engine off for at least 3 minutes and the alarm has not come back, strange?

Has anyone experienced such an error, what was your course of action?

    Regards

    Gerald

Yup, been coming on for the last 6 months. There are various purported "fixes" that involve swapping out cut-off valves, top hoses, lubrication of turbo actuators etc, but none have resolved mine. We're now looking at replacing the water-in-fuel sensor and covering, as I get that warning every now and then too - theory being that one is cascading the other.

    Cheers,

    Gordon

I replaced the water in fuel sensor in my 2010 D4 when it came on during rain in Albany over the Christmas holidays. The insulation on the wiring into it had failed causing the problem. There was no water in the fuel.

No problem with restricted performance yet, though. The closest thing I have had was getting kicked out of cruise control on one hill when towing our Geist AK 560 caravan up the long hills coming home from Albany. No problem at all when towing the 1500kg camper trailer from Perth to Darwin and back through Alice Springs and the Great Central Road a few weeks ago, thank goodness.

    Hi Gerald.

I had a similar problem in my D4 3lt, with snorkel

It ended up being the rubber elbow on the air intake, in the inner guard, was sucking closed, when under heavey load.

That elbow use to be perforated, and is a fairly soft/thin rubber.

    Worth a look.

    Cheers Ken

    Restricted performance

    Hello,
Any resolution to the restricted performance message for D4 etc? Had it for the first time a couple of days ago coming into Denham with light throttle after 12 hour trip from Perth with a heavy boat on the back. Think I did lose some actual performance but seemed to return to normal after driving at 60 kph for a while and the red triangle cleared after a soft reset. Not appeared since though wondering what will happen on return trip to Perth under similar driving conditions.
    Regards,
    Jeff

I had it three times on our lap around in 2013 towing 3500kg. All in WA after dirt of Gibb River road etc, so about 12,000 km after service. Happened when putting throttle down at low speed, once when being called up to pass a wide load, other two times pulling onto roadway and getting up to speed after camping the night. Soft reset fixed it.

Got back to Sydney across the Nullarbor with no re occurrence, though used sport mode and gentle throttle until back in civilization when pulling out in the morning.

Error codes were about Mass Air Flow restriction/inconsistency or something,so I have put it down to dirty air filter as has never happened again since service when we got back, and just back from another 7,000km towing journey this year with no re occurrence.

    Regards

I wonder if these are heat soak related seeing they involve heavy towing???

The cause could have been a sticky 2nd turbo isolation valve butterfly shaft from grit between the shaft's linkage bracket and the housing that only occurred momentarily each time before unsticking rather than for a longer time to trigger full restricted performance. The message will remain until the ignition is cycled even if the fault has been overcome. Cycling the ignition always seems to clear the message but if the fault still exists on start-up then the message reappears as soon as the discrepancy is detected. Mine had the fault to varying degrees that eventually ocurred as soon as more than very light throttle was used because the shaft finally jammed too firmly for the vacuum chamber to move. I know where to reach in to free the shaft if/when the fault re-occurs.

    Reduced Performance

This happened once with my SDV6 when towing our 3t+ van up a long climb. The guys at ULR were able to reproduce (even though it only happened once) the ordered and replaced the left turbo oxygen sensor. This appears to have resolved the problem as it has not occurred again and at the last service ULR checked logs without issue. Hope this helps.

Doubt it. Mine used to do it occasionally, often shortly after driving away from the house in Kal in the morning.

    Always re-set after stopping engine.

Told Barbagallo about it when booked for a service some time ago, and hasn't happened since.
