Would it be worth just replacing the bolt? Ie the bolt for the main tensioner is like $2.50; considering it's a head off job to fix (and even then it'll be a pain) if the bolt breaks, $2.50 is ridiculously cheap.
Gday , changed out the timing belt etc and now will need to do the HPFP belt on the rear of my TDV6 RRS , as a word of caution i have been told to cut the exsisiting belt off and then undo the tensioner , this is so that the preasure of the belt does not pull on the last few threads of tensioner bolt as it comes out . Is this a fair comment as it is critical that the thread on this bolt is not damaged in this location as the result would be painfull. Can anyone advise on this , Thanks . Al

There is a "how to" thread on this on the D3 uk site, I havent done the change so cannot comment first hand, but didnt sound that way from what I read.

I posted this rather badly, i was trying to say the thread that the bolt screws into on the block could be damaged , if there is only about 2 treads to go" is " the tension on the belt capable of stuffing up the thread by pulling the bolt and old tensioner downwards before the bolt has actualy come out of its hole that you are going to screw the new tensioner and bolt into . or is there a way of releasing the belt tension first ,Hope that describes it better . I have never done one before so just trying see if this the case or not . Al
Al, I have done heaps and yes I agree that there is potential to 'damage' the thread, but I have not experienced such happenings. (Thanks goodness...)
Far more irritating is the fact that there is VERY LITTLE access to do this job, and if your username represents your physique then you need to ask one of the kids to do the job...I am not very tall or large but I still find it very difficult access. Pain relief meds at the end of the day do it for me.

Thanks JC , So would cutting the belt off first eleviate any potential to damage the thread , sort of makes sence to me as i dont want the belt anyway I have a grace bros packing box ready for battle as you sugested before . The username is the resultant frustration of trying to get a name that sombody has not got , not realy my discription than heavens . LOL Al
Hi Al, yes certainly cutting off the belt doesn't do any harm, so go for it. In its defence the new bolt that comes with the tensioner has a lead on it, makes it way easier to refit.
One important fact there are differences between EU3 and later belts, I think in 2007/8 they change to a different length fuel pump belt as the pump or cam pulley size changed. Make certain you supply your VIN when ordering.
You will not enjoy this job, get yourself a dentists mirror, and a decent torch.
