I fell for that trap. I got a quote for a replacement Optikool screen for the D3, but I had to get the vehicle to them, about 45kms away (I think they were frightened that there was no roads or electricity down here or something). I had to get an insurance replacement screen for the D1, so haggled with the company that came out to do that. He gave me a price, I told him, I'd been quoted $X for an Optikool, and he said "OK, I can beat that". Didn't say he was going to fit the Optikool though. And he didn't. :(

Bingo. My D3 got a (tiny!!!) bit of gravel after road resealing. Centre at lower edge. It went vertical for 300mm over a several weeks then horizontal (both ways) over a period of months. I haven't heard of optikool. It that a D4 feature?

neither have i .....so will be intrested to learn .....is opticool some sort of reflective treatment

Opticool is the genuine Landrover screen. Most places will install a cheap Chinese screen unless you ask, or demand if the car is still new.
There are reports that the optical clarity of some cheap screens leave a lot to be desired.

I checked this morning that a genuine screen had arrived for tomorrow's fitting. The genuine had indeed arrived but a cheapie was to be fitted as I was told that the insurer hadn't approved the extra cost of the genuine. Now sorted.

what constitues new ....???.........car still in warranty period ???

OBriens said after 2 yrs insurers normally wont pay for original glass but I said I wanted the same special glass as originally fitted then said the same to the insurer.

I had the same discussion with my insurer when my car was only 14 months old.
I did end up with the genuine one, but was prepared to pay the extra if they did not come to the party. I was also told that once the car is over 2 years old all they would pay for was an aftermarket one.

After going through this caper with my D3 when it was 4 years old, I know about it too. 2010 floods in Qld - truck with trailer ran off the road, then the trailer swerved onto the road with about 5 rocks which absolutely hammered the screen! I think there were about 3 bullseyes and two cracks - from the bottom of the screen.

On a weekend trip down to Echuca a couple of months ago, I had a truck throw up a pebble which hit just above the windscreen wiper. Lucky for me - it just made a bullseye. Over 2 years old so no new screen, so I just had it filled by Windscreens O'Brien. Just waiting for it to spread to a crack to bottom of screen on a corrugated road.

As i may have posted before, I had a small stone hit below the windscreen wiper and it started a crack. Since the screen replacement I have applied some clear leading edge tape along the black area below the wipers. In fact one of the wipers park a small way onto the tape.
I am hoping this will be enough to protect the weakest part of the screen so that I do not have to make another windscreen claim in the near future. I already had a bullseye in front of the driver repaired under the insurance when an idiot in the Pilbara sped past showering me in stones, hence their reluctance to fit a genuine screen. So far so good.
