i dont know about the windscreen (re UV attributes) but the other day i was in the LR dealer and i asked about the other windows and the black privacy glass that can be ordered, he said fine, but just be aware that they have no UV protection, he suggested that regular tinting that can be applied afterwards would be better as it has UV protection

You might want to compare the heat and glare through your screen with that of a D4 with a LR screen by sitting in the vehicles one after the other on a sunny day because if there's no difference and your screen withstands rocks better then next time you might not want a LR screen.

I am just about to have this hassle with NRMA Insurance.

From previous experience (with a different Insurance Co) my quotes from the dealer has to mention both OptiKool & replacement clips for side panels.

The Claims guy was fairly insistent that they will use a non-oem, I said fine but it must be the equivalent (optikool) and do the clips, otherwise it wont be acceptable.... I think he realized I will be a difficult customer for them.... (Like refusal to sign a release springs to mind if non compliant.

    The little extras

The first time I had my D4 screen replaced the windscreen fitter did not replace the clips etc. The 'A' pillar LH trim parted company with the car at 110km/h with an almighty bang!

It confirmed to me that my old heart is still in good nick.

For the last windscreen installed (No5, non OEM) I had both 'A' pillar trims and clips replaced.

Glass is a natural filter for most UV - notice you do not get sunburnt under glass and auto tinting sunglasses do not work in a car with all windows up as they are activated by UV.

Opticool glass is more about infra red not UV - the marketing hype indicates it transmits less heat.

    Gary,

afaik ordinary glass is not a natural filter (that might lead ppl to think they are more protected than they really are), thats to say it might block about half of UV rays but most of them are in the low UV-C range , it blocks about half of the UV-B ray range and lets through all UV-A rays, both UVA and UVB are very damaging and can cause skin cancers, which explains my experience of getting a sunburnt right arm driving cars with (factory) tinted windows, not so much with windows that have after market tinting (plastics are much easier to have UV protection incorporated than it is in glass). UVA gets a quick tan going

    cheers

Hmm, solar absorption not UV elimination. I suppose we should also correct the spelling to Optikool.

Ah, seems NRMA will probably get O'Briens to do the job using and OEM glass.

I remember the A pillar clips, when after last time losing both strips with the one truck when it seems we where both doing I estimate quite a bit over 100kph. (it was in the NT). I know that the D3 had lowered itself with the speed

It didn't even cause heart palpitations, the real attack was a few years after...

    windscreen cracked

    Landoman,
The A pillar trim is the metal or plastic cover that fits over the screen near both front doors, it is to protect that edge of the glass and give a smoother finish to that part of the vehicle. The clips are what holds the trim in place, if the trim is removed carefully the clips can often be used again but IMHO you should make sure new clips are used. Better safe than sorry.
