    windscreen cracked

Just developed a crack about 300 mm long in my front widscreen
this seems to have stopped and not progressed any further for a few weeks

Is there a danger that the whole thing will shatter into tiny peices and totally craze over from the crack or would it take another stone to do that

I have insurance cover for no excess on first windscreen during the period of 12 months of cover so dont want to replace untill it completly goes or save the claim until near the end of the current insured period .Then should I have an other windscreen go I will be into a new insurance period and have renewed no excess cover in that new period

I don't think you're in danger of the windscreen shattering like they used too. They are laminated now. just be sure that crack does not creep into the driving vision as the would be considered a vehicle defect.

    From RMS web site:
"The portion of the windscreen directly in front of the driver must be free from cracks and scratches that inhibit vision"
EDIT; you beat me to it Graeme!

    window cracked

    landoman,
you might be able to have the crack repaired (Obriens used to repair long windscreen cracks) but seem to only do small cracks or chips these days but if you go and speak to your local branch they might be able to help you. When the time comes for a new screen go genuine not after market glass.

What's the bet, that the crack starts down at the bottom of the screen... so can't be repaired.

My D4 has had 2 cracks for probably 9 months with the one from the passenger top having travelled in several directions but recently the one from near the centre bottom decided to run horizontally in both directions so the car is booked to get a new screen Wednesday. The insurance claim is based on when first cracked so only 3 months to go before another free replacement would be available but hopefully wont be needed so soon.

Mine cracked the same way going from Perth to Darwin a few weeks ago. Crack starts at a stone chip near the bottom trim just to the right of centre then extends vertically for a bit and then horizontally left and right for about 300mm. After a day or two it stopped growing and has been the same since then.

    Windscreen cracked

Insurance companies will go for the cheapest. You will have to push them to pay for a genuine screen, (a genuine screen will have the word "landrover" stamped on it) If it's a new vehicle they should be OK but a couple of years old & they would expect you to accept after market glass.
