I did indicate a scenario and also the battery already in a low state - the radio effectively tells you when the battery is getting low. If the battery is fully charged then the radio will not quickly drain it down.

Normally when the battery gets very low - the car's systems initially limit radio power output and later will not let the radio come on at all.

My 2011 RRS with stop start button for ignition definitely has a high current draw with any accessory on that is computer controlled. (That includes the radio which is computer controlled these days).
I bought a Jaycar volt meter that plugs onto the cigarette lighter socket so that I can keep an eye on the voltage of the battery. Its surprising how quickly it drops away. My LR3 behaved in the same way and I did replace the battery on that. When I get a chance I will get a current (Amps) reading at the battery to check.

Just saw this on the UK LR4 site, radio is controlled through the computer CANBus system:

"It wouldn't be too hard to connect a second switch panel in parallel with the resistive ladder wires at the back of the radio, but you won't be able to control the on/off button - there is no switched ignition feed to control power to the radio (which I guess is what you're looking for) - it is done either via the knob on the front, or via the CANBus."

This has been my experience also, never had an issue doing it this way.

GBD4, I would take the car to your dealer and have it checked, just to make sure there isn't a problem.

The drive in was Bankstown in Western Sydney. It has recently reopened and seems successful. It was completely packed and they were turning cars away before the movie started. Overall the family loved it.

I'm thinking the issue may be a combination of (a) lights with all doors open (we got there an hour before movie start, all lights were off during the movie) and (b) the fact that the radio requires the full entertainment system to be on and is drawing more power than just a simple radio.

I've been thinking of a dual battery system for camping so I might explore that after getting it checked out (next service is due later this month)

Been there, done that at the Drive in.
My ultimate solution was second battery and portable radio. Can't fail.

I fitted the traxide kit and both a merrit and standard cigarette socket in the rear.They come in handy for numerous things while the engine is off.

Liking the idea of the traxide too. Not liking the idea of fitting it myself. :)

Easy as and the instructions that come with it are pretty good as well....
