I am also interested in this - especially seeing as though it is not covered under the corporate program.

Done mine at 12000km and cost me $400 they had it for about 6 hrs while I waited at the dealers.

Just picked up my new D4 HSE yesterday . This car is my first LR and my first diesel. Having read some comments here several weeks ago about service I asked the question. "I mainly do a lot of short trips say 3 to 5 km each, should I get the car serviced at 6 months or at least change the oil?"


I was talking to the Sales Manager at the time and he said that it was not necessary and that the 6 month service is a health check and nothing is actually changed - save your money. Posed the same question to the handover guy who had been selling LR's for 20 plus years. he said the same thing. I'm still not convinced either way but I've got 6 months to decide I suppose. My experience with these sales guys was very good and I think they are trying not to push unnecessary expense hence the advice to wait 12 months.


I know this isn't definitive advice but it's strange that a dealer doesn't push you to spend money - maybe he's right.

Letherm, not sure what you paid for your new D4 HSE, but I'm tipping that you could afford to get your oil & filter changed at 12,000 Klm's.
Extremely cheap reassurance......also helps when you go to sell it.

We tend to keep our cars for a long time so I'm concerned with longevity rather than resale value but that still helps when we do eventually sell. As you say it's relatively cheap reassurance compared to the purchase price. My old 2002 Pajero was only serviced 12 monthly and got to 190,000 km when traded for the D4. But it was a petrol engine and I'm in new territory with a diesel. I'll probably err on the side of caution and get the oil and filter changed at 6 months - can't see us doing the mileage now to exceed the 12,000 km mark - retired now but my wife's health isn't the best anymore and she can't travel a lot.


My late father was a shift superintendent at BMC (became Leyland). He showed me a sump plug from one of our cars back then (Morris 1100) and it had all sorts of gunk hanging on to it. They had a magnetic rod on them to pull garbage out of the oil. I know modern oils are a lot better but that sticks in my mind and there's got to be some degradation with use, especially with a new engine bedding in I would think.

I had my D4 serviced after 13000km at Darwin after towing my 3 ton caravan 8000k from Brisbane via Lawn Hill. It cost $410 for the service which included the oil and filter change. I have since continued my trip through WA with caravan in tow and had my 26000k "A" service carried out at Port Lincoln for $295 which also included oil and filter change. I had been told to expect a bill for over $800 for the service by others. Really good value for money with few overheads!

Keep in mind, I am referring to what is classed as "normal duty" here.

If LR themselves are saying that you only need to change the oil every 12 months, then why do it more often?

These days, oils, filters & motors have come a long long way. As has been shown in other threads, air filters for example, actually filter more rubbish out, the longer they are in service, as the smaller particles cannot get thru. So, by replacing your air filter every 6 months, you are always letting those tiny particles thru and into your engine.

I would presume (never assume) that the same also applies for other filters.

Personally, I would think that if a car manufacturer, who spends the equivalent of some countries GDP on research & development, states that 12 months between services is acceptable, then who am I to argue.

My thoughts as well,but for 'normal type' driving.
I had the oil in my D2 sampled a few times and it did 15K easily,at 20k it needed a change.I am sure technology has improved over the many years from when the TD5 was engineered.
But then again the TD5 did have an excellent engine oil filter system.

I had the oil and filter done at 6 months,8K on my D4,then after that it will just have yearly services,as it only does around 12 to 15k a year,most of it long runs.
