A GVIF interface, and gps unit into that will give on screen nav.
Only catch is you may have to use a remote to enter addresses
    Thanks Tombie.

Are you talking about the system you are developing or this approach is already available elsewhere?

I reckon I can live with a remote for address searches.

Where will this other hardware live? Under the dash somewhere?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

The Navibox-2 allows you to use the touchscreen functionality and there is an car audio place here in NZ that sells them and will install it on my 2013 D4, but the price is crazy ($2500 NZD) as you can get them on bay for about $150. Just need the correct cables, load local maps (igo) ,maybe a change in the CCF file and you should be good to go.

Tombie would be interested in your thoughts on this.

I started out with a cheap Chinese double din unit off ebay. Screen quality was poor, so was the Bluetooth (which I use heaps).
Ended up going for one of these AVIC-X940BT - In-Dash Navigation AV Receiver with 6.1" WVGA Touchscreen Display, Built-In Bluetooth®, and Advanced App Mode for iPhone® 4/4S | Pioneer Electronics USA
Screen quality is great, Bluetooth is awesome.....work through a separate Parrot system microphone. Great sound quality. Like everything about it, except that you cant download off road maps onto it.
Thinking about going for one of these Polaris GPS
It doesn't have a separate microphone for the Bluetooth, but does have Hema off road maps at an extra cost. I know a guy that has one in his car and one in his wife's car. He is very happy with them.
My audio guy has installed quite a few and has not had any call backs.
    Fairly good price as well.

    Cheers, Craig

No Tombie, it is a full replacement.
Keep in mind that I no longer have my D4......the Pioneer unit is fitted to my new ride which is another brand of vehicle. Having said this, the head units are adaptable for almost any vehicle.

    So that raises another question.
What components in the Dash of a D4 is the head unit? Is it part of the panel that includes the volume control and selector? Because that is not a standard Double DIN size, How do you replace it?
Or is it behind the small screen? and the buttons are just a Sweep late?

Looking at the setup behind the dash..
Pretty much you're stuck with what you have.
There isn't a way to easily (although anything is possible) strip out the factory unit in a D4 and fit any aftermarket version.
