Had the D4 in for it's first 6 month service/safety check yesterday. I asked the service manager about the auto headlight operation especially as I had just driven in broad daylight some of which was straight into the sun for 1 hour and it didn't turn off. He said that the sensor is in the little cut out in front of the rear view mirror. This cutout also has the auto wiper sensor. If the cutout is not clean you get issues. I must admit, I don't clean that spot unless I'm washing the car which is usually not as often as I'd like so it's feasible that this is the issue. I don't think the wipers get there either.
On a separate issue, I've had occasions where the car hesitates on takeoff - bit scary when you're turning across oncoming traffic.
The service manager said that if the brake pedal switch adjustment is not correct the computer thinks that the brakes may be on and hesitates about taking off. Sort of like the old method of holding your foot on the brake and accelerator simultaneously to prevent rolling back on a hill or to take off quicker when lights change. They did adjust the switch from 3mm to 6.5mm. Time will tell whether this has made a difference.
