D4 Sat Nav

My off the beaten path navigation is done using an otherwise fairly useless iPad (version 1) running HEMA maps supplemented by detailed maps from memory map, gps signal comes from an aviation quality external Bluetooth GPS/glonass receiver. Works well for us and as it is not bound to the vehicle trip planning can be done anywhere comfy.

Personally think that sat nav built into vehicles is a bad idea because they will be quickly eclipsed by mainstream consumer tech (as is the case with mine).

Just gotta motivate myself to fit a gvif and some additional cameras (rear, front, under) and my screen will be slightly useful !

I am going to go against the grain here, and say that I love the factory Sat Nav.

We drove to Sydney over Easter, had the nav on all the way, and the only time we made a wrong turn, was when I thought I new better... :angel:

It also puts the next turn on the centre display, between the taco & speedo, with a distance count-down, so you dont have to be an expert at guessing distances.

It has all the features of any decent GPS, like history, take me home, way points, POI ect.

Plus, if you are thinking of ever selling the car in the future, it would probably be expected to be included with such a high quality investment that the D4 is. :D

I guess I was just pig headed & decided not to get factory sat nav as I considered it way over priced & that I also had a perfectly good TomTom at home & I use that.

I know that factory one looks the good with the integration but I just felt given the price of the car, it really should have been standard equipment, and that plenty lesser priced cars including the Grand Cherokee in the Limited model up have it fitted standard.

Having said all that, I still wouldn't mind having it....lol, too late now though.

It shows how to do an update yourself via a DVD/CD. As explained in the thread, it's not intuitive and you get error messages that would make you think it's not working.

I just bought the HN7 which does have the fixed speed camera warnings. It actually has the combined speed/red light camera warnings as well. And it also has "high accident Zone" warnings :)


I love this unit. I have a $23 ebay camera plugged into it and I am running a wire from the AUX port at the rear seat area to the unit so that I can load an play music from it through the Car stereo. It works great for that.


I have it mounted by one of the below so it hangs down in front of the useless screen (partially) and doesn't block the windscreen view at all.

The good thing is that it uses version of Oziexplorer so all the maps I bought years ago can still be loaded onto it.

The factory SatNav is good for main roads, soon as you go of the beaten track, it's any non offroad satnav, great for around town.

I can recommend VMS as a good offroad GPS, we have two, old and new, just updated.

I've used the factory GPS in a few different brands of cars now and I have to say the one in my new D4 is one of the better ones. We optioned Meridian Audio and Tech Pack.

There are aftermarket GPS available but they're not cheap...

I had factory Sat Nav in D4 number one and bought the second one without ..... Christ I wish I'd given it more thought. Latest D4 is an SE with Hi-Ice ... so H&K Sound System, Touch Screen, Reverse Camera.

I agree with every point on this thread .... because there are some very good pros and cons.

I bought a GO 600 TomTom in lieu of the factory fit Sat Nav. My thoughts are:

Pros:

Depending on what options you buy, the Tom Tom appears very cheap (although I wonder in lieu of everything would it stack up if you have already paid for the Hi-Ice system....probably worth paying the extra for the Sat Nav).

The Tom Tom updates all the time, free of charge .... yet it still has incorrect speeds, turns, etc. You can join the update 'club' (input your own updates) but you need a smart phone and it sucks data like you wouldn't believe and it appears like very few owners do ... since I constantly find areas that have the wrong speeds posted. Great concept, poor execution.

Much better graphics in some instances but often a bit more show than go!. The OEM Split Screen is simple and very, very effective, the Tom Tom is not, it's sometimes difficult to predict the turn in time. In a CBD, the buildings block your view in 3D mode. I've found it slower to calculate a re-route and has often gone out of 'focus' while it does this. ... great in city traffic ... NOT!

Can take Hema map plug ins.

Cons:

You have to find somewhere on the windscreen that doesn't block your vision and/or **** you off. The bigger the screen ... which seems like a cracking idea at the time, seems less so, when you stick it on the screen ... especially at night. The OEM system doesn't produce any glare at night and seems less affected by sunglasses polarisation during the day.

The OEM Sat Nav has voice command for Sat Nav and phone ... not sure if any windscreen jobs do that. You don't realise how much of a PITA it is until you don't have it. OEM will zoom in and out, find POIs all on voice command. It will also call phone numbers, etc.

When parking, you may wish to remove the Sat Nav off your screen, in case somebody else wants to borrow it. You also have to modify any sun-visors to work around the mounting stalk.

I'm sure the list of Pros and Cons goes on .... but for me, I'd take the LR OEM system anyday.

Oh and btw, one member said he thought the OEM system was better than others he'd used .... absolutely! Try Merc, BMW or Audi. Their systems are more integrated but are freakin horrible to use.

Oh ... after market fit for LR ... no Dealer wants to or possibly knows how to. Non OEM has been done very easily ... for $2K + (if you already have Hi-Ice) but you will not have Voice Command ..... and ... LOL .... will have the same system fitted to a Toyota (Igo Primo).

The Sat Nav in our Subaru Forester needs something like 6 or 8 button presses just to turn off the guidance. It also has issues with only connecting to certain phones.

In comparison the system in our D4 is a dream come true.

Another pro for the D4 SatNav is muting audio when giving guidance. Wish it also worked on the passengers!
