Brake pad warning light - how long have I left? ( D4 trip to the snowfields )

I do about two rears for one front.


My D4 3l front pads (not rotors) were replaced at about 70,000 before my trip to Cape York a couple of years ago and I have just replaced the front rotors and pads at the 160,000 service. Only the rears were done in that time frame. That sort of life out of both rotors and pads is incredibly good in my experience. The brakes have been brilliant and wear incredibly well also, so you certainly can't complain.

Hi Jon,
I'm with you, to wear them down that quick you should be smelling something wrong. As mentioned could be a sensor. I had a small peice of gravel get into the caliper and break the sensor. I checked the pads and cut the cable the boinging nose was driving me nuts. Check first for the trip.

I replaced my rear brakes at about 55,000 km.
Did not have to replace rotors as they were with in limits & had worn evenly with no grooves

They told me at service I would probably be up for fronts at 72k service.

When my sensor light came on brakes were squealing so worth replacing sooner rather than later.

My rears were done at 45 and I have just had the fronts done at 52k's.

Once the light came on, I drove around for about a week and ended up chewing the inside rear rotor which meant I had to replace those as well. I'd be getting them done ASAP.

Mine has done 75,000km - still on the original pads and nowhere near needing replacement.

However, I'm planning on fitting a set of Akebono pads all round next service - dealer has agreed to install them for me in place of OEM and they are keen to monitor them for performance in comparison to OEM pads.

I changed the fronts at 89000kms I think and are about to change the backs, have 98000kms on them no light on yet but getting low.
Tow between 2500kgs and 3000kgs most of the time. Not much arround town work but.

I changed the rear ones at 30,000km , Dealer told me front are 3mm left ...holding on to see when the light comes on for the front:(

Thanks all, went back to the mechanic and he's given them the thumbs up 2 weeks ago, not done much driving since then. All good, will get new pads next week.

Unless he put it on a hoist, he may not have checked the inside pad. This was the problem with mine. Outside looked ok but the inside pad was shot and chewed the rotor.
