I'm with both you guys on this, the sport mode helped keep the revs higher. It does say in the manual not to labour the engine during first 4000km (as well as avoid towing).

I found on some occasions in normal sedate 'D' mode, the downshift was slow in coming and I'd blip the throttle to force it some times, but 'S' (serious driving :D mode) ensured the power plant and gearbox were in perfect sync ready for twin turbo torque takeoff ... Or engine assisted anchors out brake assit.

Sometimes I'd forget (still do) that I'm in 2500kg of metal with a Diesel engine :burnrubber: I'm sure this vehicle has more poke than my old Calais with its 357 Gen III :unsure:

My car is remapped and in a straight out drag race my car actually accelerates to 100kph quicker in Drive. But for normal driving around town and when towing I also find Sport is more responsive through the gears. On the open road at the speed limit is is a bit annoying as it takes a long while to get into 6th but then you do not need Sport unless hill climbing so it is easy enough to slot back into Drive.

Yeah i didn't flog it when i got it but certainly gave it plenty of quick take off and didn't use cruise for the first 1500kms and did use the paddles a bit to drop back and hold gears driving home and so forth.

But bloody hell not using cruise was the hardest thing I've done for a while haha so hard. Most of my drives are usually 200kms + each way unless i go to work but usually take the old car to work which is only 25kms each way.

Similar to most comments so far, I am using it to vary revs for running in. I still use cruise though and shift down a gear or two (or four).


What I find sport mode most useful for is in city driving and highway traffic, keeping a slightly higher rev/lower gear for longer and have found hitting the down change paddle drops a few gears to have you instantly ready for lane changes etc... In other words to overcome the throttle response delay.

I was told not to baby it or I wont get economy.
Have worked it well on overtaking lanes,I must admit I was wondering if buying a baby 3.0lt would be an issue.NAH,she kills Black Betty on Whorespowers:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::c ool::cool:

How long are we doing 'running in' / 'not babying it' for?

I always thought 1000kms but some people are saying 4000kms, just give it a good run in from the start no babying it and it will be good.

It was always drummed into me to run a race engine in properly you let it use its mid range rather than rev it where ever possible and you kept revs capped and gradually built them up with time. Using midrange (grunt, Torque ) especially if going up hills worked best to help in the run in process. That supposedly makes the engine bed in its rings better as the engine is under load. Hi revs before its run in don't put the same pressures on the engine and supposedly can actually work in reverse and see the rings not bed in properly.

However this is how we were told to run in race engines, having said that I was told by the engine builders that the same principle applies for any engine whether it be a race or street engine.

Might be best if you really want to know to get expert advice rather than listening to all of us armchair experts on forums, after all you only get the chance to run the engine in your new pride and joy in once properly.

It says 3000km (not 4 like I wrote earlier oops) in the owners handbook.
