What have I done and how do I fix it?

A big thank you for trying to help. However the problem still exists. I have taken out the ECU box and yes can see where it was drenched. Theres not much of a seal to protect it from water is there. What probably made things worse was that the boiling water I poured over the corroded terminal contained a fair bit of salt. I have been on to Whyatts and Willie is being very helpfull. Still managing to tow van and average 60 to 70 Kph. Getting between 15.4lts and 18 lts per 100k. Depends on the wind direction. Will let all know the outcome after Whyatts at Geraldton.

I hosed out my engine bay of my RRS soon after I got it - it took about 3 before the gongs, messages and issues stopped - the worst issue was that the transfer case message came up when down the shops but I noticed that while the fault messages were up I could still change between hi and low range and of course when in low range it gonged and wouldn't move out of it so I had to drive home in low range - was ok the next day until it gonged again a day later - as time went on the gongs got less and less and finally went away.

The engine bay now gets wiped down not washed.

Thats not salt you washed into the ECU, which would be bad enough, Its Sulfuric Acid , the ECU is going to be stuffed.

Hi Balanda Chris, have followed you plight with interest as I am in Darwin and lived in Geraldton for 20 years before moving up here. Jjust wondering if you have your rig sorted out now and if Whyatts have you up and running again.

Hard Reset Instructions


Connect the negative cable to the positive cable. (NOT the battery.) You will need a short length, (a foot or so), of light gauge, (14 to 18 gauge AWG, insulated stranded copper), wire to span between the battery cable ends as there is not enough slack in the positive and negative battery cables for the ends to touch each other.

Awesome information, in relation to spanning the battery cable ends, could you use a jump cable...one half of it anyway, to achieve the same result?

I just use the spanner that removed the cables from the terminals to make the connection

Hi everyone,

Slowly made our way south taking in the hospitality and views of Gnoorea Pt,
Caped Range NP and Denham to name a few places. While travelling no change in vehicle status, still locked in low range but able to cruise at 75kph at 3.4 revs. The fuel consumption rose significantly when we encountered the souwesterlies. About 19.5 litres per 100km. Dropped the vehicle to Whyatts 8am on the 15th, The diagnosis was as you learned landrover addicts predicted.
The Transmission ECU had **** itself. A thorough check by Willie at Whyatts identified problems with the park brake actuator, split battery near negative end, leaking power steering box and poor performing suspension compressor.
With a full service and transmission oil change my bank balance has been lowered considerably. However Whyatts have been tremendous, keeping me updated supplying a courtesy vehicle and providing sound advice. As for the D3 when it is said and done, it still powered on towing a 3.5 ton van and got me out of trouble. I'm a happy chappy.

Wow what a problem!
At least this issues were able to be fixed albeit with an appropriate wallet letting.
I will certainly watch what I do if spraying some water around the place to keep things clean.
I can also vouch for Whyatts, they have been looking after my D2 since 2008 and my D4 since 2011. I am a bit if a fuss pott when it comes to my cars and they (Whyatts) manage to keep me happy.:)
