Don't feel bad Andrew, in all these years I've not tried mine either. Like so many computerised features, I just trust that it will work when needed :)
Also have you tried the HDC yet ? Go find the steepest slipperiest mucky hill you can and drive off it with hdc on and no feet using only the cruise control +\- to moderate or increase speed ... :)
It would also be very useful if the brake master cylinder or booster fails if it can be thought of in time.
Havent yet Mick.
Only used it in the D2 to "excersise" the shuttle valves,it was way too fast and not really required in a manual vehicle.I believe the D4 system is more up to the task,and being an auto it may be more of use;););););)

In low range you have similar control as a manual if you shift manually (quite surprising to me as my d3 is the only auto 4wd I've had). The hdc is excellent - requires a bit of a leap of faith for some - but it goes really slow if you want it too and keeps the car very straight even on the most gnarly of descents ! Just don't be like my wife and accidentally activate it around town (handbag) and then come home saying I've broken the car (red faced when i asked why she hadn't turned it off) ... Haha
Im not to sure about that from what i was told when i got the car it does a hard ABS lock (not as hard as it can but as hard as is comfortable) then when it gets below 3kmh it pulls the park brake on. Because i thought it was a full lock up but when you try the park brake and then jam the brakes on hard holy crap they pull it up bloody quick. So i think it does a hard brake but also making it easier for the passenger to steer it off the road.
As I have mentioned before that I have tried it, I also kept my foot hard on the accelerator when I got Mrs Plane Fixer to pull the hand brake on. The moment the brake lever was lifted it cut the power and the stopping distance was very short.
This makes it an extremely safe backup, as if the driver has some sort of medical problem with the foot then just pushing the accelerator hard, the hand brake will over ride it. I am happy my wife knows it as I am no spring chicken either.
Young whippersnapper.......listen sonny,,,back in my days:angel::angel::angel:
I tell my wife I am only as old as I am feeling, and as she is older than me it usually gets me a cuff under the ear.:D
Geez Andy, you have done well and be congratulated for being able to get a D4 before you are 50, I was well over 60 when I got mine, as I always thought they were old farts carriages:wasntme:
