Definitely looks way more robust (and simple) than the OEM device.
Handle shaft is vertical, or cranked slightly outwards as permitted by the joint. The handle has a bit of interference with the wheel when it is on ground, but it can swung out of the road when it lifts off the ground.

Got my roof rack fitted up . It is a 2nd hand Tracklander 1.8m rack, with some custom mounts to sit the rack low onto the factory long rails. The rack is bugger all heavier than a Rhino platform and very solidly made. Makes less noise at highway speeds than the roof bars I had on there previously....

Now to work out what I have to carry up there for the upcoming desert trip. Will be at least a 2nd spare wheel and a 2kg gas bottle or 2, just deciding if the recovery tracks will get a ride and also what extra fuel I need to carry...

I also have fitted some LED lights into the cargo area. I went with 9W "Eagle Eye" LEDs from ebay. 2 are mounted on the inner side of the ceiling trim panel to light the load area, and 2 are mounted in a custom housing to direct down onto the lower tailgate area when the upper tailgate is open. At the moment they are operated separately via a 2 way switch but I may just combine the circuits into one switch yet.

I spent Easter over at Esperance, about 7hrs drive away.
The new cargo area lighting is fantastic. Should have done it years ago....

I was really impressed with the vehicle on the beach. The beach run from town to the east out to Cape LeGrande NP (about 20km) is usually a flat hard run that could be done in 2wd. This year it was VERY soft and narrow and several vehicles were getting bogged, especially those with trailers. With my 19" tyres down to 18PSI, I had no issues at all and even towed a nice couple in a Forrester about a 1km along the beach to harder ground. They were locals and got beached in some deep ruts on a very narrow part of the beach. No one was interested in stopping to help . I found I could stop, managed to do a several point U turn and could gently get them mobile (with recovery tracks under them) and then proceed along the beach with them dangling behind. Others were getting bogged all around and I think one other had cooked his gearbox in the soft conditions. Rods at +60mm plus off-road height (when required) makes a huge difference to keeping clear of the soft stuff. No photos unfortunately......

I rate mine highly too. Lights on the raised tailgate are often all I need turned on, even when cooking.

Had the rear diff pinion seal replaced yesterday as a warranty item. Drove home 2 hours last night. Came out into the garage this morning and immediately smelt the whiff of gear oil. Underside looks like this.

The dealer has been great. Tilt tray the 180km back to Perth no questions asked. If a loan car doesn't eventuate I'll be back to driving the Series 3 for a while....

I got a Restricted Performance error the other evening when driving back from Perth. Luckily only 30kms from home and flat running so not too bad. Plugged in the Nanocom and found a MAF error. I ended up replacing it with a VDO unit as it was overnight from Perth vs a genuine unit that was 2.5x the cost and probably 3 days+ to get here. The new MAF fixed the error so happy days there. I will be replacing the other MAF ASAP as it could go also at any time, and at least I would then have a working used spare to throw in the trip kit.

Whilst checking the codes a found a P0481 code for Cooling Fan Open Circuit. Now the engine got hot enough a month previously when towing, enough to spike the gauge high and throw a dash message, but it stabilised eventually and all was good again. The annoying thing is that even though the vehicle knew it had a problem with the cooling system, there was no error messages otherwise. Today, when sitting idling beside the road (22 degrees ambient temperature) it got hot again, but a 30 second drive brought the temp down again. The viscous fan was idling only, even when the engine was at operating temps. Time to go looking. A reference to the workshop manual told me to look for the electrical connector to the viscous fan down beside the cowling. Low and behold this plug was completely unplugged! I had had some dealer work done probably 4 months ago to replace a cracked inlet manifold. They must have omitted to plug this connector back in when reinstalled the radiator.... All that time the viscous fan had been idling only, as it will not spool up at all with no electrical input. FFS, hopefully no long term damage caused......

So, a defective MAF made me plug in the reader and search the error codes, and I found the cooling error codes which I had no indication of otherwise. I could have been rightly stuffed if stuck in a traffic queue in some warmer weather if the temp spiked and I had no way of moving to get it down again......

Ha, 18 months since my last post in this thread...

The last 300km of a 5 days WA Goldfields trip and I popped a Restricted Performance error coming in to Perth. Heavy accelerator triggers it and it can be cleared by turning off and starting again. It can be driven in sport mode with keeping revs high to prevent lugging and high boost.

I'll have to get home to Bunbury tonight before I can check the code. My Nanocom was one thing I did forget....

Well I hope it’s your top intercooler pipe that’s split, and not an inlet manifold.

It’s a D4 3.0L from the profile - They don’t do the intercooler hose so it’s more than likely a manifold or the throttle body where the throttle and y section are glued together. That said, it can also be turbine actuator or anything. Codes will tell
