Long range automotive (LRA) tank?

Puta few litres in the Aux Tank, Open the fuel cap and turn the pump on you should see fuel flowing into main tank.

We have just finished a trip and no gauge is no biggie

I wasn't aware there was one there

With every thing off, I can faintly hear the pump running (that was with the tank empty too)

Just checked this out, and I didn't see any fuel flow.

Sounds like your pump isn't working
