ha! yes this one was a conservative looking bloke driving. Both empty cars so I can't offer any excuses... the sun was in my eyes? Autobox was in the wrong gear? (it was...)
At the end of the day it's a relaxed car that likes being driven in a relaxed way. Not really an autobahn stormer! The 3.0 might be different, I've never driven it, but for the first time in my life I wasn't obsessed with power when buying my Sport - I could've had the SUPERCHARGED model for similar coin (2 years older though) but for what I wanted the TDV6 was the perfect option, or maybe the TDV8, but at that point they were $15K more and I didn't want to dish that out.
It's not like I need more demerit points anyway!
The Audi was fantastic, I had a ball with it and so now is the new owner. I sold it at the right time though. Can pick up a similar one for half the price or less now. I did a few trips from Adelaide to Cairns in it and realised that I needed something that was more suitable for that sort of thing, with longer range, way more room, good economy and most importantly, me not being worried if I hit a floodway in it, or bottoming out in road train ruts on some of the dirt roads around Aramac and Torrens Creek. Or the fact that the cast alloy sump was practically the lowest point on the car.
So yes it's funny you should mention central QLD! Love it out there, but the roads are at best, not great. At worst they are bloody awful. SQ5 might be great out there, but you seriously need some underbody protection, and the german stuff doesn't have it unless you buy an ML with the off-road pack (which there are NONE of second hand). RRS was the only car I looked at that adequately squared away my desire to do off-roading while also knowing that over 99% of my driving is on-road.
I may pick up another S4 if I find one cheap that needs work, someone's gotta keep those WRXs and EVOs in line!!
