I do love having the solid steel rear end -dont have to worry about ripping plastic bumpers off (which I managed to do on my previous 80 series land cruiser)
Was the reason we went with a rear bar also, for us Kaymar was the only option, as Outback Accessories hadn't made their rear bar for the D3/D4 yet, they released it about 2 months later, anyway, it has saved the rear a few times

    This is confusing.

I have been doing some hunting around today.

I found some one today who does install these things in the ACT. They used to be an OL franchise but are no longer and do sell this stuff.

It appears Opposite Lock sell two brands of SWC

Land Rover Discovery 3 & 4 Wheel Carrier | Wheel Carriers | Opposite Lock

Discovery 3/4 RHS Single Wheel Carrier | Wheel Carriers | Opposite Lock

The first one looks like the Frontrunner SWC and the second looks like the Outback Accessories one. And then there is the Rijidig one.

I am unsure which is best. All have some advantages.

I like the Rijidig one but have to clarify a couple of things
    1) Do you need to have an additional light as in the Outback Accessories SWC if you have 19" wheels
    2) Does the Rijidig SWC have gas struts like the other two.
I have sent a PM to Murray to clarify this but if any one knows the answer please let me know.

While I am at it has any one got an Outback Accessories AUX Tank?

Photo below from the Rijidij website. Definitely don't need an extra light with this one - but this is probably only 17" or 18' wheel at the largest. Not sure how much further a 19" wheel and tyre would stick out over the tail light, but would not think it would be that much.

On my Outback Accessories RWC with an 18" rim and slightly larger than original tyres, the right tail light is virtually completely obstructed from directly behind - so an additional light is definitely required.

I also have the Outback Accessories AUX Tank installed.

It is close to 100 litres in capacity, and is "gravity feed" into the original tank, so no transfer pump required. The only drawback (as some might see it) is that there is no fuel gauge with this tank. Because it is gravity feed, your fuel gauge stays on "Full" until you have used all of the contents of the AUX tank, and then works as normal as you drain the original tank. This has never been a problem for me - I love the fact that there is no transfer pump to go wrong (and I don't have to remember to manually transfer fuel or switch tanks as you do on some systems I've seen).

Might also just be a trick of the photography - but the Outback Accessories tank may be wider and does not appear to hang down anywhere near as low as some others that I have seen - (I was comparing mine with Ean Austral's pic on the previous page of this thread).
    Cheers .........

I have the Dolium supplied rear wheel carrier on the D3 with a near 32" mud tyre fitted, which is just about as big as you will ever fit to a D3/4 and it doesn't need an extra light as you can easily see the rear light while following.

It also doesn't have a damper fitted standard and even though ours often gets parked on a hill most days it doesn't need one. Never had a problem with it swinging closed at any time. If someone is only after a single rear wheel carrier not sure why it needs to be anymore complicated or heavier then one of these?

Someone said they are no longer available, will know soon as I sent a email to Dolium to ask the question, I know they used to often be out of stock for weeks on end though.
    Cheers,
    Terry

    Terry,
If you go to the Dollium site they say they are not sourcing these any more. I believe they are the frontrunner ones from South Africa.

However I believe Opposite Lock are marketing them or ones that look like them. Note there is a new model out

Based on Terrys experience I wonder if the the same is for the Rijidij one which do not have gas struts as well.

Is it a problem when you open it on a slope or close it. I have found this to be a bit of an issue on a previous car, pajero, where the wheel is on the door.

The RWCs that cover the wheel, come with an extra light and is fitted with the carrier.

If you do decide on the rijidij carrier, ask Danial at the Expedition Centre to fit a gas strut to the carrier, I'm sure if it's doable he'll do it, after all, he does do mods for a living.

Any of the 3 carriers will do the job, if you come for a drive to Lake Llyal on the weekend, there are at least 20 D3/D4s to look at with single and twin carriers.

I have similar oversize tyres as Terry, close to 32"

This carrier a 4x4 Intelligence is no longer made but it too has a gas strut to keep it open on a slope.

The Front Runner (ex Dolium) carrier has a lock that once you push it out far enough clicks in and holds the carrier out.
If your on a really steep hill then you can swing it out past the side of the vehicle and it sits there no problems at all, however the tyre will rest on the tail light.

It's just a case of being careful when using any of these rear wheel carriers at any time, personally I reckon the ones with gas struts fitted are to restrictive in how far out you can swing the wheel, but that's just my opinion.
    Cheers,
    Terry

OL have a twin spare rear bar like the Kaymar

Discovery 3 Twin Wheel Carrier | Wheel Carriers | Opposite Lock

I had the same style OL carrier on my 80 series and never had any issues, they are a well built item (thats my old 80 on the OL website too)
Landcruiser 80 Twin Wheel Carrier | Wheel Carriers | Opposite Lock
One thing I like on the OL bars over the Kaymar bar is the high lift jack points. OL ones have them on the outer wings to each side, Kaymar as them on the back towards the centre of the bar. So to use a high lift with them you'd need to open the wheel carriers out
