My engine replacement was a DIY one with the help of Bundelene and his hoist!
The things I used from the the Ford was basically the Long motor and the turbo, everything else was swapped over from the Disco motor - just remember the Ford gearbox is a Ford built ZF and I found the flex plate to be different.
My gearbox service place said that the LR box is a genuine ZF box but the Ford box is made by Ford under licence from ZF - while the box is essentially the same there are some minor internal differences that have no impact on operation etc - they also said castings are not quite as good as the ZF ones (a bit rough in spots) but again has no impact on operation.Quote:

The other aspect is the Ford radiators are pretty poor and vibrate in the mounts and cause cracks around the gearbox cooler allowing coolant in the ATF. Meaning any Ford ZF needs to be checked for coolant damage. Not an issue with the LR and BMW ZFs.
