I've taken my D3 key in the surf heaps of times for a couple of years no problems, have a D4 now keyless entry, not w\proof, got to hide it a couple of feet from car. put it in a plastic bag and bury at base of tree in sand, donot forget which tree. Pull into one for me..

The D4 key can be hidden in the front bumper and not activate the unlock. However I'm not a big fan of hiding as you are observed while hiding and good luck with any insurance claim.
Why not just get one of those waterproof containers and put the key in that and take it with you?

I wouldn't swim the key regardless of what other people have done or what the manufacturer says it is able to do. I'm not sure which car it was, but I had to search around to get a blank so manual key could be made so I could get into the car and retrieve my electronic key.
It may cause a slight loss of hair searching for a key blank, but its much better than what I assume LR charge for a new key should it get water-logged, oh and the dude that comes out to open the car for you to get your house keys. IMO it's better to be safe than sorry.
I must admit, despite what I have read elsewhere with regards to the key being water proof, I would have been weary about getting it wet in the salt..... but the fact that you have been swimming with it in the sea for 4 years is really incredible! There are not many things out there that are water proof that cope with the salt that well!Quote:

start surfing a surfyak, and you will be able to carry a waterproof container in it to hold your key. I love surfyaks.

Was advised by the dealer when I bought it to alternate the keys.
Just use the other key occasionally. The other key is my wifes one so it gets used.
I heard that the D3 keys are water proof also. Interestingly, I jumped into the water with the D2 Key in my pocket and have had no problems with it. Not sure on their waterproof status.
I have a 2012 D4 with keyless entry. Where do people keep their key when they do any water sports such as windsurfing or kitesurfing? Is the key fob waterproof?
