D4 fob while scuba diving/snorkling/surfing?

I am trying to figure out how I can go for a surf and keep my D3 safe. I used to put my key in my leg rope pocket with my old car, but cannot do this with the electronic D3 key, and as far as I can tell there is no way of disconnecting the key itself from the electronic remote. I am loathe to hide the key in the bumper (as I have done once or twice) for fear of getting my pride and joy stolen. Anyone out there have a solution for me??

Also, does anyone have any advice on the need or otherwise for rust proofing your D3. I live at the coast, and do not recall being offered rust proofing when I bought the car last year, but that might be because it was a demo model. Is it needed or are the D3s already well protected? Anyone know how much it costs and how long it would take to do? And should I get it done by LR or is it cheaper to get it done elsewhere and if so does that void my body warranty??

Lots of questions from a new D3 owner, apologies for that, any info would be appreciated

Seriously though, that's an interesting question.

Perhaps an underbody safe (one can buy them for cars) into which you can lock the car key.

Can the D3 be unlocked with a plain key (cut to the right profile) to allow you to get into the car to get the hidden electronic key. My P38A can.

I sem to recall the D3 key being water proof... but it would be worth finding out for sure.

yes they clam they are, and we tryed on a sports key, and yes it did still work, but i dont no how long it can stay under water for,, i think its more splash resistent, not water proof

as for cutting a key i would be serprized if you can find a blank key the same profiel as the LR keys, and you wont be able to start the car with it you still need the 'real' key,

buy a LM

they come with surfers key,

I thought D3 key was waterproof to 30m.
I have taken mine caving in some very wet caves.

and put it in the wash.

Sorry missed the other question.

D3 has galvenised body panels so pretty good rust proofing. Ladder part of the chassis is the weak point.
Poms with salted rods have few problems but have found the paint to be thin around the tow point.

In regards to hiding a key if you don't want to take it swimming, have seen these advertised before (not sure it was this brand exactly, but same principle)...

Only works if you've got a 50mm receiver of course, but a good idea I reckon.
