Im always pretty anal about fuel i always like to keep the tank on the full side never let it get down to far.
I learnt a valuable lesson today. I was driving back from Mossman to Townsville when I decided to take a small detour to one of the beaches 60km North of Townsville. I had 92km of fuel remaining on the dash and I was going to fill up at Rollingstone which was another 10km down the highway. After my little detour which involved a bit of mud and a creek crossing I got back onto the highway with 70km worth of fuel remaining. As soon as I hit the highway she conked out. The gauge was showing about 1/5 full. I honestly thought it was a much more serious problem having only had the car a few weeks. No, dopey ran out of fuel. Thanks to the bloke in the Hilux who gave me a lift to Rollingstone and the people at Rollingstone who went out of their way to drop me back. The 20 litre jerry I bought wouldn't seal so the owner of the BP gave me my money back. I gave it to the people who drove me back to the Disco to buy some beers. Why is it always the people in the crappiest cars who stop to help you out? My car has a 100 litre aux tank. This must have affected the gauge somehow. I now know to always leave something in the aux tank. I averaged 12.4 l/100 km for a return trip in the V8 with lots of running around in Mossman and Cairns. Very happy with that. More efficient at Highway speeds than my Defender 90.

I am glad I found out about the fuel guage on the highway close to a servo. Not at the end of some inaccessible track.

Definitely agree there!! Jeeze for a V8 not bad on the highway on fuel certainly not that far off the SDV6 D4 i have i think i get about 10L/100 average as i sit on 110kmh and sink the boot in overtaking and when taking off.
The 4.4 and 5.0 V8's are both very economical if you do lots of highway driving and stay at the speed limit. It's stop start city driving where they use lots of petrol.
The other great thing about the V8 is how quite and smooth it is especially doing highway driving.

Actually might be best you don't, I would hate for you to go home wishing you have bought the fully optioned super quite and extremely smooth V8 instead of a rattly slower low spec HSE diesel. ...

HAHAHAHA yeah I'm hearing you could be a bad idea although i do love my SDV6 very much!! I just assumed that the V8s would be pretty heavy on fuel but my SDV6 isn't that great around town if i sink the boot into it a fair bit but i dont worry because it doesn't really bother me so i guess the fuel in the V8 would be close to the same!
