D3 V6 Petrol Snorkel

PS. Why aren't there any cheap clones of the mantec snorkels (with the air intake opening at the rear) I think they look much better than the Safari style ones where the intake is at the front

The Safari top will swivel to any direction preferred. Just loosen the hoseclamp. My guess on cheapie snorkels, is that the take up on expensive vehicles like the D3/4 would be slow, as most owners care too much about the potential damage and horrendous repair bill, to risk a cheapie.

Have not looked for a while but there used to be cheapie snorkels for D3's on eBay often, but I reckon as Admiral said why put a cheapie and take the risk that it might split, when for a couple hundred bucks more you can get a good quality one.

Does the direction of the Air Intake have any impact on Fuel Consumption? Although I have not noticed any major change in mine I thought that the air pressure from having the intake forward reduced consumption - leaner mix? Facing backward would result in suction of the air - richer mix?

I once tested a RRC snorkel with ARB type head, and the increase in air pressure to the air cleaner was 0.1inch of water measured with a Megahelic air pressure gauge at 80Kmh.

So the gain is pretty much nil, although I must admit that the seat of pants dyno felt that the 3.9 went better with the snorkel facing forward. The ARB type head also has drains all round which would decrease the air pressure by leaking.

When you consider that a petrol engine is "throttled" by the throttle it is hard to see how a petrol could gain anything.

It might be different in a diesel as the snorkel should give cooler air which MAY increase the air density and on later diesels like TD5 on, this is measured by a sensor and fuel compensated.

Because copying other persons IP is stealing... And that is plain wrong and reduces innovation.

As well as never wanting to risk an engine for the sake of saving a few $$$.
