I personally do brake fluid on time and not km's, and thats just because brake fluid is hygroscopic (abosorbs water) . For brake systems with DOT4 every 2yrs. I previously had toyotas and for some reason they still use DOT3 (DOT4 is apparently compatible but I have heard of several ABS module failures when using it...), DOT3 absorbs water faster than DOT4 so they where on a yearly change interval

Also my indi advises the following for D3/4 and RRS diesels

Engine oil and filter every 12K
Front and rear diffs every 40K
Transfer case every 60K
Auto every 80k,if towing 40k
Brake fluid 40K
Coolant flush every 5yrs and replace cross over pipe(what ever that is?)
Fuel filter every 24K
Pollen filter every 24K
Handbrake clean and adjust every 24K
Timing belts every 160K.

Heavy off road work these may have to be done more often.

Draining the fuel sedimentor may also be important.

Where is the fuel sedimentor ? if there is 1 I need to check it.

I don't think there is one,only the fuel filter,which is nice and easy to change;)

Yeh done that several times, didn't think there was a sedimentor but just checking.

I sold a Kakadu and am getting a Discovery this week.

The Kakadu has a lot in it about its water separator which is part of its fuel filtering. Evidently water is not so uncommon in country diesel tanks.

Some people with Toyotas also put in additional water separators in their fuel lines. As well as extra auto transmission coolers. As well as crankcase fume to air inlet manifold filter catch cans (which trap diesel particulates from coating the inlet manifolds which is a bugger to clean and reduces air flow hence worsens economy and performance).

Do Discovery users have access to such preventatives?

And does anyone here know what are the particulate filter issues with the Discovery diesels?

The fuel filter has a water separator in its fuel filter in the Disco, but is debatable about how well it works. I am in the process of looking and installing a 2nd filter with a bowl type set up.


I think majority of disco's don't have the diesel particulate filter in Australia, but others may know better. As far as I know the transmission is well cooled.

This is a pretty comprehensive list of when and what to service..could almost apply the same practice to any car/4wd that wasn't brand new..
