The gear-change will only stay selected if the operating conditions are within the overlap margin of an auto up-shift or down-shift. Shift too early or open the throttle too much on an up-shift will cause it drop back down, sometimes immediately.
My 6-speed's previous s/w version provided true temporary manual operation whereby the selected gear would be retained either until the upper or lower limit for that gear was reached as per full manual mode or until the operating conditions aligned with normal auto condition. This was great to use because an up-shift at 100 kph whilst already in top gear followed by squeezing the throttle to get over a short hill would cause the box to stay in top gear until the throttle was relaxed over the other side, whereas selecting sport drops a gear immediately even before an up-shift can be done to get to manual mode.
