Except when its not too late to alter one already on the assembly line so as to get the special order vehicle to the customer ASAP. That happened with my D4 when my 1st one arrived with features that I didn't want - a suitable one (ie colour, e-diff and engine) on the assembly line had its intended features altered to match my order and I got that one quite quickly.

No, not dealer error - LR production scheduling mishap as the order was placed after the close of the first day window and all 3.0s up until then got the DPF and sat-nav, reverting to standard specs after that date. Mine was not supposed to be built in the first day window batch but got added to that batch after the close-off date. They probably thought that they were doing me a favour.
I was advised that altering in-production builds is regularly done just to get something started on the production line, but allowing for changes to be made for the later fitted items where the change doesn't impact on the timing of the build.
I'm not guessing, instead relying on the information provided by my dealer.
