I waxed mine 2 or 3 times a week for about a month. Each time, it was quicker to do than the last, as it would just glide on easily.
The build up will protect from bugs & water stains, much the same, if not better, than the paint protection offered.
Why not ask them what it involves, and what products are used, and how they are applied.
And yes, if you dont have some sort of protective barrier, such as wax, then the salt or sand can "etch" into the paintwork. Or more correctly, usually into the clear coat over the top.
