I had a situation just over a month ago trying to get an 18" tyre in Bamaga. There was nothing north of Cairns.
Considering Bridgestone D697's are about $400 in 265/60R18 and only about $250 in 265/65R17 I would think there's still a compelling argument for considering 17" wheels for both price and tyre replacement availability for those with a D3 or 2.7 D4.

Hi Drizzle, the 18" AT3's on the D3 are just about worn out now. That is the path I reckon I will be going down of fitting 265/65 D697's on one of the spare sets of 17's as the every day tyres, easy economics if one has spare rims, not always so if one has to buy rims to try and save money on tyres though I reckon.

There's always the option of X5 17" rims @$50/rim on eBay. Still way in front [emoji6]

I believe I've got my head around sourcing a factory 18" rim to use as a second emergency spare only for use on the rear of my 2014 D4 (I've got 5x compomotives on the way), but have only found reference to the D3 18" wheels. Would a D2 HSE 18" wheel be suitable also?

18" D3 are fine as exactly the same brakes were fitted to the V8 D3 but D2 don't clear the centering spigot for starters.

D4 18" wheels fit on the rear of MY14 onwards.
