My D4. The first 3/4 try attempt was my messing around / playing with different settings and speeds for the camera. It was very apparent to me on that trip that the D4 and defenders required very different driving to get up the same dunes. I decided to try a combo of settings to see what the D4 would do.
The defenders were on 35" tyres at 18 psi, my 31" were also at 18 psi. The foot print of the deefers were 50% longer.
In that soft sand I would've preferred to drop the psi a bit more..but the tyres had a few nicks that I was cautious of over lowering.
All up, an awesome experience and never once worried about the D4 :-)
Thanks for that info SimmAus.
Do you think the D4 would have had a better time of it on 18"s or no significant difference (assuming you were on 19"s - not sure what rims 31" tyres run on)?
She is on 18" rims, Bridgestone D697 AT tyres.
In the real soft dunes, lowering the psi down to 14 would've made that particular run easier.
There are approx 1100 dunes across the Simpson - the D4 walked over when driven properly. After conquering the first x hundred dunes I did start doing strange things every now and then out of curiosity (going for a play!)
To give comfort to the OP, not once did I get concerned about getting bogged.
Good info and video...
So after your experimentation/testing, what would you say is the best overall setup for 18" wheels? Sounds like 18psi most of the time and then drop to 14psi for the very soft dunes? IIRC, Gordon recommends 16psi in sand with a drop to as low as 12psi for really soft. And slightly higher pressure for 19" wheels.
Also, when you say "walked over" most of the dunes, do you mean at the same low speed as the Defender or was a bit more momentum required in comparison?

Personally I'm a fan of lowering to what works in the conditions...18 worked for 99% of the time, and I was concerned over pre existing damage to my tires, so didn't lower further until Big Red.
16 psi would've made an easy job easier I suppose, so sounds ok. Many have mentioned lower pressures, which I would also do if I were struggling and my tires were in good condition.
The D4 seemed to need more momentum than the defenders on that trip in the sand - well I drove it with more! Possibly cos I could, and still hear the radio ;-)
The D4 walked up some (slowly), got stuck a couple of times in really soft sand (that was fixed with more momentum), and flew over others. 1100 dunes throw up many different scenarios...on the whole though I drove slightly faster than the defenders (but that is probably true of most driving anyway!)
hm good question would say combination of several things
tyre size 35" and muddies
tyre pressure 15 psi (big red 12)
gearing 4.11 high range 1st gear
driver? sitting in exactly the right rev band
took me 2-3 hours on the first day to get the hang of it as I never had defender and manual is sand before
